If you wondered why yesterday’s news stirred such a significant reaction from the VR community at large, it’s not just because Facebook doesn’t have a stellar reputation on privacy, it’s also because the company specifically promised it wouldn’t force users to log-in with a Facebook account to use their Oculus headset.
Apple has just been granted another AR/VR related technology patent, to add to their growing list. Apple’s absence from the flourishing virtual and augmented reality stage is felt more strongly with every passing day.
Avi Bar-Zeev, Hololens co-inventor and longtime AR/VR stalwart, has left Apple, Variety reports. According to his LinkenIn bio , Bar-Zeev worked on Hololens (first dubbed ‘Screen Zero’, then ‘Fortaleza’) up until 2012 when he left Microsoft to found his own company Syntertainment.

Mistakes in doing everyday business led to a $500 million verdict against Facebook’s Oculus division in a legal battle with ZeniMax. ZeniMax sued Oculus, Facebook, and well-known virtual reality leaders John Carmack and Palmer Luckey for misappropriating trade secrets after Carmack left ZeniMax’s id Software and went to work at Oculus.
The age of high-end, commercially available virtual reality began on March 28 with the launch of the Oculus Rift. Apple and Meta employ marketing departments and vast legal teams attempting to imbue the vision of their executive leadership on the public. I’m tired of corporations contributing to the misunderstanding of virtual reality as they deploy branding tactics in place of genuine education. Yes, VR headsets are time machines too.
It lacks all Oculus Exclusive titles like Beat Saber and Population One, but its store is becoming anyway interesting. He complained about having to obey platforms and their taxes (clearly hinting at Apple), saying that he had a different vision. And Pico doesn’t plan to curate it like Meta, so its ecosystem should be much more open.
