Though I would love to let my birthday piggyback on that accomplishment, credit actually goes to Facebook-owned Oculus, which launched its Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S headsets on that day. Having participated in a VR tournament using this cutting-edge headset, I can honestly say that Oculus’ hard work is apparent.
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Monday that the company is acquiring Insomniac Games, a storied game studio and one of the most experienced in VR development anywhere in the world. The studio has developed three Oculus exclusive titles, with its fourth and largest yet, Stormland , still due to launch in 2019.
Without any major VR hardware releases on the radar for this year, 2018 is shaping up to be a time for content to shine. Just a few months after the acquisition of Beat Saber studio Beat Games , Facebook today announced the acquisition of Sanzaru Games, the studio behind the Oculus-exclusive Asgard’s Wrath and a handful of other VR titles. The studio began working with Facebook’s Oculus before the company even shipped its first consumer headset.
For example, our September estimates for 333,000 cumulative Oculus Quests sales were based on disclosures at the OC6 conference that $20 million in games had been sold for the device.
