Unity CEO John Riccitiello has been following both virtual and augmented realities for a long time and, like the rest of us, he’s waiting for it to go mainstream. Today at Unity’s Vision Summit, he outlined how and when he thinks it will get there. “It starts to take off 12 and 24 months from now.”
The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is in Los Angeles, CA next week and it’s always one of the largest events of the year for gamers, giving giants of the industry including Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo the chance to show off the latest hardware and games to drive the next generation of consumer interest. Things are changing though.
We released the demo on Steam in May 2018. Some are easy like VivePort, which is basically a Steam build with the Steam stuff removed, but then on the other hand you have Sony’s eldritch submission process and things like Quest performance optimizations. It’s my first VR game and I love it, warts and all.
The company is providing a Unity and UE4 SDK so that interested developers can develop for it. Carbon Studio has just finished the porting of the game to PSVR and The Wizards will be released for that platform as soon as Sony approves the title (usually that requires 2-3 months).
And in fact, some weeks ago Sony has made everyone understand that it has delayed the launch of the PSVR 2 because the market is not there yet. Sony believes in VR, and we definitely believe at some point in the future, VR will represent a meaningful component of interactive entertainment. PlayStation believes in VR. PSVR headset.
