Sony Corporation announced today that it will invest $250 million in Epic Games, the company well known for its hit game Fortnite and the Unreal Engine game engine that powers it. Unreal Engine is the second most popular game engine for building VR content, and has powered PSVR games like Farpoint , Moss ,and Firewall: Zero Hour.
Epic Games, the creators of Unreal Engine, said it would consider building a launch title for Sony’s “next VR platform” during negotiations about Fortnite cross-play on PlayStation in 2018. And though Epic hasn’t made any VR games since then, it seems that in 2018 it was still ready and willing.
The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is in Los Angeles, CA next week and it’s always one of the largest events of the year for gamers, giving giants of the industry including Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo the chance to show off the latest hardware and games to drive the next generation of consumer interest. A standalone game, Scraper: First Strike, Episode I, will premiere on all four major VR platforms in late 2018 , in advance of the full Scraper game scheduled for a 2020 release on console and PC. We had to get dev kits from Sony, Oculus, Vive and WMR. Then it was building the main stream in Unreal and branching off when needed.
