The company revealed its first iteration of Project Aria back in 2020, showing off a sensor-rich pair of glasses which the company used internally to train its machine perception systems, ultimately tackling some of the most complex issues in creating practical, all-day augmented reality glasses of the future.
With the release of iOS 11, hundreds of millions of Apple devices gained the ability to perform basic augmented reality functions, albeit viewed through the screens of iPhones and iPads. Apple doesn’t plan to sell the headset though, and will likely only use it for testing purposes.
After having written my predictions for virtual reality in 2020 , let’s see what will be the trends for this year in augmented reality. Regarding big brands, I expect Apple and Facebook still to wait a bit before releasing something, while Magic Leap will have to make its move to come out from the quicksands.
