Sony invests $250M in Epic Games. Sony has announced that it has made a big investment of $250M in Epic Games through one of its subsidiaries. The investment gives Sony a minority stake in Epic that now is evaluated at more than $17B. And Sony for sure wants to have a stake in the metaverse. Top news of the week.

A standalone game, Scraper: First Strike, Episode I, will premiere on all four major VR platforms in late 2018 , in advance of the full Scraper game scheduled for a 2020 release on console and PC. The full game doesn’t have a hard date, but somewhere around 2020. We had to get dev kits from Sony, Oculus, Vive and WMR.

Sony and Verizon have partnered to create the next generation of VR concerts and have announced this partnership at CES. At this point, I wonder if GDC may be canceled as the MWC.

OpenXR has arrived at the first version of the standard, and now it has been implemented by all the major vendors : Microsoft has implemented it for HoloLens and WMR; Oculus for Rift and Quest; Valve has implemented it in SteamVR; etc… Talking about game engines, Unreal Engine now already offers it, while Unity is still lagging behind.

If you take a look at programs that truly utilize graphics processing, they are really decades-old apps: Photoshop( 1987 ), Unreal Engine (1999), 3Dmax ( 1988 ), Blender ( 2002 ) and others.
