Companies like HTC, Oculus (Meta), and Apple will continue to innovate and launch devices equipped with the latest technological developments. from 2020 to 2027. reaction as the original Oculus Rift. Kalinowski was previously the Head of VR Hardware at Oculus for the consumer Oculus Rift, Oculus Touch, Oculus Go, Rift S, Oculus Quest, Quest 2, and Quest Pro. Ma reported that the goal is to ship this AR glasses product around 2027. I can't believe this!"
If this is true, it is a true bummer, because the next-gen AR glasses, codenamed Artemis, are only going to be built in 2027. This is a very useful resource for all of us XR developers that are going very soon going to experiment with Mixed Reality applications on a headset by Meta, Apple, or one of their competitors.
Every year I like to write a detailed report about all the major news from Oculus/Facebook/Meta Connect. But maybe we can compare it to the moment Palmer Luckey launched the Kickstarter of the Oculus DK1 : it’s the start of something new. I think the comparison with the early Oculus DK1 prototype holds for many things.
The historical moment of the launch of Quest 1 (Image by TechCrunch) Oculus Quest 1 launched in 2019 for $399. And in the end, the beginning of June is a good opportunity to answer whatever Google had announced mid May at Google I/O and at the same time to put pressure on Apple for the WWDC conference in mid-June.
I have been talking with hundreds of people across the industry and have discovered that the changes coming to Apple are deeper than just a VR/AR headset. This is the fourth paradigm shift for Apple. So, what is Apple getting ready to announce over the next year? Eventually, I hear, Apple will even bring 3D to 2D monitors.
As a tech guy, of course, I’m all in for retro compatibility, and I would still love to sometimes attach my Oculus DK2 to my laptop and remember the good old times playing Tuscany. I know that I’m saying something unpopular, but I understand Microsoft’s decision.
But I hope you’ll enjoy this newsletter coming from the world of the undead anyway… Top news of the week (Image by Apple) Apple starts accepting applications for Vision Pro devkits Apple has started accepting applications from interested developers to get a Vision Pro to develop XR experiences.
A new cycle of XR The Apple Vision Pro launch has been a disruptive moment for our industry (Image by Apple) As I said in a popular post a few months ago , I think we have entered a new cycle for immersive realities. Huawei and Pico are rumored to be working on an Apple Vision Pro competitor).
The reality turned out to be pretty different, with Meta forecasting its first AR glasses in 2027 , and they will be for sure a product for enthusiasts, so mainstream adoption will still need various years to happen. It’s the same with Apple ARKit, which took everyone by surprise and led to the democratization of AR on smartphones.
When Microsoft launched Windows Mixed Reality in 2017, it wanted to take advantage of the rapidly growing PC VR market, which was previously dominated by Oculus and HTC. However, rumors suggest Microsoft could be working on a competitor to the Apple Vision Pro. Notably, that doesnt mean these headsets will still get major updates.
This seems to hint that the two companies are going to build a new XR headset together, which according to the rumors will be the Quest Pro 2, which would be aimed at competing directly with the Apple Vision Pro. This could be useful to let Meta answer to the movies available on the Apple Vision Pro because of Apple TV.
And so Apple bought them shortly thereafter. So SPACES was acquired quietly by Apple this year. And Apple also earlier this year acquired NextVR, which-- that company has all the licensing rights to real-time capture in 360 of NASCAR, and NBA, and all of the other sports. Apple's a $1.7-trillion Golf, I think. everything.
