For OpenVR-compatible headsets like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, watching streaming 360video from from your browser is now as simple as clicking a button and putting on your headset. From a user’s perspective, all you have to do then is navigate to a 360video and press the ‘VR mode’ button.
It may be hard to believe but its been four years since Samsung and Oculus first announced their smartphone-powered Gear VR headset. In darker times, the best 360° videos we had access too were grainy, nauseating clips of GoPro stunts and claustrophobic concerts. I’m not sure which impresses me more. Let’s get lost.

When in 2015 I had my first Samsung Gear VR, I was amazed: finally, I could enjoy high-quality tether-less virtual reality. Today, thanks to the fellow VR community member Eloi Gerard , I’ve found an article on lowyat.net that confirms that Samsung is not that enthusiast about Gear VR and that has probably different future plans.
The video I saw was impressive also because the headset has an integrated 8K video decoding hardware , that makes watching 8K videos in it great (remember that in 8K videos, the 8K resolution represents the full-dome of the 360video, so the part that you see has actually a resolution inferior to 4K most of the time).
You can check out the 360video on the Oculus platform starting today. It should be available in the Oculus Video app on the Oculus Rift or the Samsung Gear VR. There will also be a 360° trailer of the experience available on Facebook.
