I’ve been a big fan of the cute little Samsung Gear 360 camera since its first unveiling in the spring of 2016, and always recommend it to people inquiring about the best consumer-friendly 360 cameras out there. The cost is lower than the 2016 version with a pricetag of $229 and you can record in up to 4K resolution.
Just this week, MagicLeap announced the company’s first sports partnership with the NBA and Turner, to bring in what they are calling, “the next generation of sports viewing and interactivity.”. It’s currently available for Samsung Gear VR, Google Daydream, Oculus , and Google Play.
Despite the marked absence of Samsung, all the usual players were there. I have seen the ODG R9, HoloLens and the Meta in controlled demos and so far only the HoloLens comes close to magic. And I mean actual magic – not the VC Kool-Aid-drinking Magic-Leapmagic. I came, I saw, I critiqued.
I remember in, oh man, it must be 2015/16, Coachella livestreamed 360 content to VR headsets and I believe it was pushing to the — it was! — it was the Samsung GearyVR at the time. Have you tried MagicLeap? Sam: I have tried the MagicLeap, yeah. It’s the little magic window of your phone.

He’s built AR system prototypes for Samsung, and had long executive and technical careers in mobile software infrastructure before jumping into AR back in 2009. Like my Dekko, and what we built at Samsung were exactly the same technology that ARKit and ARCore and MagicLeap and others built. Blew my mind.

Above: Samsung’s Gear 360 and Gear VR headset. Question: From a prioritization standpoint as far as investments, are you looking for the next MagicLeap, or are you looking at content platforms, content creation, codecs? Now he’s doing VR and he’s come up with a couple of funny VR shorts, interactive 360videos.
Alan: That, to me, is something that… at the very beginning when VR was kicking off, when Samsung did this huge presentation and they had hundreds — or probably a thousand headsets — all synchronized. So it makes it a very seamless experience. So what we did is, we partnered with the filmmakers of the Click Effect.

OMG, it’s almost 3 years that I write these roundups… the first week peek was exclusive for my blog subscribers and it featured as best news the release of Google Blocks and in the other news something about Samsung Gear VR… how much time has passed since then! MagicLeap raises other $350M. It would be very intriguing….

If you're trying to engage your audience for that beautiful 30 seconds, and really make them engaged throughout a 360video or whatever kind of ad unit that you have?

I’d say that through at least 2022, the enterprise will account for the majority of augmented and mixed reality headsets like Hololens and MagicLeap. I think the three-degrees-of-freedom [3Dof] sets — like the Go and the Samsung Gear VR before it — are very well-suited for video viewing, that sort of thing.

We are at the same level of Vive Focus or Vive Pro… probably the display is the same made by Samsung. This is the same chip of the Samsung S8 and it is not the latest available for VR: Qualcomm has already released the 845 VR reference design. The screen is a pentile OLED, featuring 1600×1440 per eye resolution. Horsepower.
Google Daydream has exclusive access to YouTube’s considerable 360video library (although admittedly curation could be better) as well as its massive 2D video archive. MAGICLEAP’S CONTROVERSY. Check out the Reddit AMA from The Information reporter… and the rebuttal from MagicLeap itself.
Whereas if it's just a heads-up display where you're watching a video and you're just -- not even a 360video, just a video -- you can then relax. I've seen some of the-- Huawei come up with a pair of glasses and Samsung, they're all kind of teasing at these. But for now, we start to wear these big VR headsets.

I guess the only ones that wouldn’t are financial services, things that are– Alan: Today, MagicLeap just released a press release. And just like on Google Sheets, you can search Shutterstock to preview images and you want to do the same thing on MagicLeap or Hololens or any 3D application, like Unity or Instagram AR.

And I know Samsung's new Note 10 has 3D capture built into it.
