Image by MagicLeap). MagicLeap is on sale. A report on Bloomberg informed us all that MagicLeap is exploring a sale of the company. The sales never skyrocketed and now MagicLeap is in desperate need of cash , after many layoffs, disappointing sales, and having put its IP as collaterals to a bank.
This operation is similar to the “stitching” done with multiple flat videos that have to be merged into a 360video. Performing similar reasonings on all the images , the system gradually reconstructs the whole 3D shape of the space.
Releasing a simple 360video as a marketing ploy is old news these days, so it’s refreshing when companies embrace VR to enhance their experiential brand activations in unique ways. After quietly settling a gender discrimination lawsuit recently, it turns out that MagicLeap is back on the fundraising trail.
The one that caught more my attention is the official release of the “Vive Video 6 DOF Lite” mode. You know that 360videos are nice, but one of the main annoyance is that if you try to move your head, the visuals actually remain fixed. This breaks immediately the magic. nReal answers to MagicLeap.
We're going to dig into using MagicLeap and Hololens and mixed reality headsets as a tool for business. And so we got-- our main first break as Extality was leveraging some of our game connections and things like that, to get close to MagicLeap. Just take 360video, for example. Well, there we go.

So you don’t know anything about coding, Unity, Unreal. Alan: So how do you then get people to learn how to do Unreal and Unity without teaching them? So the traditional way to do it is to use Unreal or Unity. Maybe I guess the Unity asset store would be the same. Or even 360videos, we support that, too.

The tools are pretty [new], and Unity and things, you need to invest a fair bit of time and effort to build something. Like my Dekko, and what we built at Samsung were exactly the same technology that ARKit and ARCore and MagicLeap and others built. Things like Unity developer or 3D modeller and stuff like that.

And what I mean by that is, we had this proof of concept, we were really passionate about doing this, we understood the benefits, but we didn’t really go hire anyone that had Unity experience, or didn’t hire anyone that had 3D modeling experience. I didn’t have a background in Unity. Alan: That’s incredible.

They're hiring a Unity developer or a 3D modeller. But at the same time, for those companies that do have that and really want to bring things in-house, what are some of the tools that you're seeing -- besides ARKit, ARCore, and Unity -- that are standing out to you? There's something from MagicLeap in there, and there's.

A bit like what happened with Henry ported from PC to Oculus Go by John Carmack: he used a special encoding of 5K 360video and the experience is similar to the realtime UE4 experience on PC, even if at the same time it is completely different. For instance, in Unity, the Oculus Utilities plugin is the same for PC, Go and GearVR.
Michael: And this is why I’ve been working on starting this dojo, or this VR maker space; because the tools for building — there’s VRTK for Unity… there’s just all these tools. Unity is always my top one. As someone who grew up as a game designer and player, I definitely side towards Unity.

I guess the only ones that wouldn’t are financial services, things that are– Alan: Today, MagicLeap just released a press release. And so we already have a set of integrations with proprietary tools like Unity and Real Render and so on. I guess it would be still Unity, for now. Alban: Yep. Alan: I saw that!

I remember years ago — I think it was probably, I want to say about five years ago — we had a Unity session in our office, where we did Unity development basics, and we invited a lot of companies from the area in Austin to come to our office, and we would run a Unity training session around 2D/3D asset development.

They’re a Unity authorized training partner and their team of 20 people is giving professionals the skills they need to build value-driven XR experiences. Like, “Unity 101: here’s how to make a model.” Are they building stuff for MagicLeap? Alan: So how did you begin?

This attitude makes me understand that Facebook won’t release an all-in-two headset with a cable like the MagicLeap One, and will always go for an untethered approach. I’m a developer, where is Unity, where is Visual Studio? Also Aria is untethered but it works together with an external box. Privacy in AR.
