This week in XR hasn’t had any explosive news, but it was interesting nonetheless: in particular we had cool info on AR glasses, with some news from Kura, Lynx, and Samsung. Samsung AR glasses concept has been leaked. Popular Twitter leaker WalkingCat has leaked two trailer videos about two AR glasses by Samsung.
Nokia has launched the OZO Player SDK , a cross-platform foundation for creating applications with high fidelity VR video playback. The OZO Player SDK comes as both a native SDK and a Unity plugin for those already building VR apps with Unity. “There’s a lot of things coming in the pipeline to enhance the SDK.
Also noteworthy: Final Cut Pro X will be able to support 360video editing, Unity and Unreal now have VR support for Macs, and SteamVR is coming to Mac… and although there was a sweet on-stage mixed reality demo using Star Wars assets and an HTC Vive, there was no mention of support for Oculus.
I’ve been a big fan of the cute little Samsung Gear 360 camera since its first unveiling in the spring of 2016, and always recommend it to people inquiring about the best consumer-friendly 360 cameras out there. The cost is lower than the 2016 version with a pricetag of $229 and you can record in up to 4K resolution.
While Guided Meditation VR is rendered in real-time on tethered headsets which are backed by a PC with plenty of processing power, the mobile Oculus Go version of the app , relies on 360video captures of the virtual environments instead. But then along came a new method for playing back 360video content on Oculus Go.
When Daydream launched as an alternative to Gear VR, it seemed destined to kill Samsung’s ecosystem. This is very useful for instance to share videos and photos, since you can connect your headset to your Google account. There is Youtube : it works incredibly well to watch 360videos and VR videos in general.
When I accessed the “Movies & TV” app it even auto-loaded a 360video section. When I picked a video it auto-launched all around me without having to load up another 360video player app of any kind. I got to go on a virtual tour of Rome and marvel at the potential of VR tourism.
We all joked about Samsung waiting for the Apple Vision Pro announcement to copy it, but according to some rumors, this is exactly what is happening. But having these new displays is a huge undertaking, and the production may only start later this year. Anyway, these are all rumors, so take them with a big grain of salt.
During all these months, I had the occasion of reading on Linkedin about all his cool prototypes and enterprise solutions that he and his colleagues have developed inside the company, ranging from 360videos to hand-tracked training solutions with the Quest, not to mention XR entertainment solutions for airplane passengers.

But they claim having also seen a Unity experience running from it (maybe it will be possible to develop for Horizon with Unity, as it is possible with VRChat), so developers may still be able to create more complex stuff. After so much time teasing it, Google has finally announced Android XR, the version of Android for XR devices, and gave hands-on demos of the headset it is building with Samsung and Qualcomm. Google hopes it to become the to-go open operating system that XR device manufacturers choose as the runtime for their headsets and glasses.
We are at the same level of Vive Focus or Vive Pro… probably the display is the same made by Samsung. This is the same chip of the Samsung S8 and it is not the latest available for VR: Qualcomm has already released the 845 VR reference design. For instance, in Unity, the Oculus Utilities plugin is the same for PC, Go and GearVR.
I’m very interested in this device, that’s why I dedicated various articles to it, like the tutorial on how to get started with Go on Unity , how to stream the headset content to an external screen and my comparison with the Vive Focus. Unity development. The headset.
