With the show floor still closed, the highlight of the day has been the speech by Unity CEO John Riccitiello that spoke about the metaverse , telling us what he thinks it is and how he thinks it can evolve. The Unity CEO talks about the metaverse. The Unity CEO on AWE stage to talk about the M-word. That was totally insane.
The keynote from Unity’s Vision VR/AR Summit yesterday showcased just how far Unity is reaching into non-gaming content when it comes to augmented and virtual reality. The person who is in charge of Unity’s xR strategy is Tony Parisi, who is a co-founder of VRML and a long-time open web advocate.
A bizarre strategy, that doesn’t surprise me anymore, though. Unity’s HDRP is now VR-compatible. Unity High Definition Rendering Pipeline is now compatible with Virtual Reality projects. This means that now with Unity you can create visually stunning VR experiences that before you could obtain just by using Unreal.
We talked Unity, open standards, the metaverse, and more, but the general thread pointed to OTOY as one of THE pivotal companies in the VR space. The Big Unity Announcement. At Unity 3D’s conference in L.A. last week, OTOY announced their technology would be natively integrated into the Unity engine. What is OTOY?
This latest acquisition is another piece in a secretive strategy: over the past few years Snapchat has quietly acquired a couple of other potentially augmented reality-related companies as well as talent. The Seebright SDK also supports Unity and Unreal engines and is compatible with both iOS and Android.
OTOY Is Building One of VR’s Most Important Technologies Right now, OTOY’s focus is on mobile VR and 2D 360videos. This strategy makes sense since desktop VR is still a small market.

Michael: And this is why I’ve been working on starting this dojo, or this VR maker space; because the tools for building — there’s VRTK for Unity… there’s just all these tools. Unity is always my top one. As someone who grew up as a game designer and player, I definitely side towards Unity.

We started working really early on with the DK-1 from Kickstarter, testing, playing around with Unity, seeing what we could do, up to now where we're easily 200+ commercially funded, brand funded XR experiences. And alongside Hill+Knowlton Strategies, one of the WPP [Group] PR and strategy agencies. I'm a cyclist.

He’s the marketing director of Insta360 and leads North American marketing strategy, partnerships and communication efforts. And it’s also when you’re thinking about a 360video, and I know this is probably trivial knowledge for you, since you’ve been using our tech for so long. Is that correct?

Alan: Our guest today is Jonathan Moss head of learning, technology, and sales enablement and XR strategy at Sprint. When we got into some more robust… like, with the HoloLens and some other platforms, where we actually needed unity and 3D assets, that’s where we started getting into that snag with not having experience.

So you don’t know anything about coding, Unity, Unreal. Alan: So how do you then get people to learn how to do Unreal and Unity without teaching them? So the traditional way to do it is to use Unreal or Unity. Maybe I guess the Unity asset store would be the same. Or even 360videos, we support that, too.

Unity changes how it handles XR Plugins. More info (Announcement by Unity Technologies) More info (Comment by Upload VR).

The tools are pretty [new], and Unity and things, you need to invest a fair bit of time and effort to build something. ” When I look at the market, the companies that are taking that same sort of strategy — everything from Microsoft down to startups — are the ones that are doing relatively well. Blew my mind.

I managed to see “most” XR projects and companies and what they were showcasing (including some 360videos, lidar scan with an artistic touch , AR and VR as well).?It “ “ There were also a few fully immersive exhibitions powered by amazing tech (Spatial, Unity, MeowWolf, Dell, DC, Porsche…), which was great to see.
I picked Unity as the game engine because it is one of the best ones out there, I’m good at using it, it has a great community that can support you in case of issues, and it is also the first engine to be compatible with XR headsets when they’re out: Apple itself talked about Unity during the announcement of the Vision Pro.
