LeapMotion, the pioneer in optical hand-tracking, has been acquired by Ultrahaptics, the enterprise-focused immersive haptics company. According to the Wall Street Journal , Ultrahaptics reportedly acquired LeapMotion for approximately $30 million. Image courtesy LeapMotion.
According to a report from Business Insider , earlier this year Apple was on the verge of acquiring LeapMotion, but the deal fell through days before it was expected to close. According to the report, this is the second time in some six years that Apple had conversations with the company about an acquisition.
What an exciting week for technology, with the Facebook Connect, PS5 price announcement, Apple event and the release of RTX30 graphics cards! Even Apple uses modified ARM chips. This acquisition is relevant for AR/VR because ARM designs power also all the standalone VR headsets like the Quest 2 or the Vive Focus Plus.

Niantic will now focus all its efforts on its geospatial tech , which mixes AI, AR, spatial intelligence, and geolocation. Im happy about it because if Niantic made this operation it means it believes AR is going to become profitable soon-ish (maybe in 3 years). During the keynote, CEO Sundar Pichai and his collaborators announced interesting features both for AR and VR. The sentence with which they have started the tease is “Big things are in motion here at Ultraleap”, which makes me think about something big that moves… may it be a new device to perform body tracking?

This was a very good thing and attracted many people to Magic Leap.
Facebook is reportedly working on its AR glasses (made with Luxottica) that should be released in 2023. All the people that were working on AR/VR inside Facebook now have a new group they belong to: “Facebook Reality Labs”. This was the previous name of the AR/VR research division guided by Abrash, that now gets rebranded as “FRL Research”. There’s also a reference to a whiteboard that you can use together in AR/VR and in real life.
In my visit, I tried a lot of AR/VR experiences , most of them just for few minutes. 3D objects had washed out colors , a bit like when you see AR objects through HoloLens 1 and Magic Leap One … they appeared a bit semi-transparent. I looked on my right, and I saw a virtual bottle on a barrel, together with some apples.
