According to a report from Business Insider , earlier this year Apple was on the verge of acquiring LeapMotion, but the deal fell through days before it was expected to close. According to the report, this is the second time in some six years that Apple had conversations with the company about an acquisition.
Top news of the week (Image by Apple) Apple Vision Pro 2 may come in 2026 The rumors about the Apple Vision Pro 2 continue. It seems that most of the rumors are aligning on the launch of an Apple Vision Pro 2 in 2026–2027. What a time to be alive! Matt Miesnieks said that the rumor aligns with some things he heard.
On the last day, I tried many interesting technologies, but I selected two for this summary, which are the first two that I’ve tried: the new LeapMotion Controller by Ultraleap and the AR technology by LetinAR. The demo here was just about using gestures to make an engine 3D model to be exploded into its component.
Ctrl+Labs already demoed it years ago: check out the link to the Dino Game that I added below this paragraph. More info (FRL Official blog post) More info (Road To VR reporting and commenting the news) More info (Ctrl+Labs’s Dino Game Early Demo) More info (ETH’s experimental wristband).
Hardware infrastructure and software developer tools from big players like Apple (ARKit) and Facebook (Camera Effects platform) directly contributed to a huge surge in interest in augmented reality. San Francisco-based LeapMotion has raised a $50M Series C for their hand- and finger-tracking technology.
This is cool because without having to add external hardware like LeapMotion , all Vive Pro users will be able to use their hands inside VR experiences to interact with the VR environment. Looking at the demo video, it also seems that this hands tracking system can work wirelessly through the Vive Wireless Adapter …wow.
Today in the last of our 3D Jam spotlight series, check out these VR demos that take you to the edge and leave you breathless. Dive into a virtual shopping spree in this fast-paced demo from Petricore. There’s no shortage of creative developers with awesome ideas for using the LeapMotion. Alien Planet. Bad Dreams.
It featured over 350 speakers, and over 250 exhibitors in 100,000-square-feet expo, including a 20,000-square-feet “Playground,” which featured AR and VR experiences from developers like Chicken Waffle and novel demos from manufacturers like RealMax.
I think I even tried to get an interview with John Carmack, like, the day after he did a demo at E3. They found medical companies that were more interested in how precise those hand controllers could be, so they started doing demos, like a virtual catheter insertion and other kinds of medical training demos. Alan: “HaptX.”H-A-P-T-X,

Ultraleap with tracking cameras The first demo I tried when I entered Ultraleap’s booth was its flagship hand tracking with a VR headset. It was a reference design by Goertek which was mounting no LeapMotion controller. There was a demo that let me slide and click elements on various UIs using only micro gestures.

Probably Ultraleap, or even when it was just LeapMotion, should have aimed to be bought by a headset manufacturer before all the major XR brands started developing hand tracking internally. This means that Samsung wont go all-in with hand tracking like Apple did. I wonder if they will ever open it up to other developers.

Apple acquires startup SPACES. What is sure is that Apple continues to slowly build its AR and VR technology, so that one day it could come out with something amazing. The sentence with which they have started the tease is “Big things are in motion here at Ultraleap”, which makes me think about something big that moves… may it be a new device to perform body tracking? More info (Ultraleap teasing a new device) More info (Maybe a new sensor is coming) Has Palmer Luckey tried the Apple headset?
Some months ago, we all read that letter where Zuckerberg claimed wanting to get complete control of the hardware and software stack so that Facebook shouldn’t depend on external companies, like Google or Apple for the SO, or phone manufacturers for the hardware. CNET’s Scott Stein has tried the demo and has been amazed by it.
I also tried a demo that employed Taiwanese gloves and scent emission hardware. The company showcasing it was OReady and the demo was a marketing experience for a whiskey brand. Even worse, it wasn’t able to track my finger movements well (it was worse than LeapMotion … and LeapMotion doesn’t have worn sensors!).
The time has come and finally Apple will implement a depth back camera in its upcoming iPad Pro. It is another step towards the creation of a great AR ecosystem for Apple. And probably the Android world will follow Apple’s steps soon and will adopt depth sensors as well in the upcoming months. Amazing demo, have a look at it!
