Apple, Sony, Microsoft, and countless other vendors in the technology space are now investing heavily on the concept of “spatial audio”. Certain trends in the XR environment are contributing to the rising adoption of spatial audio technology today. Here are just some of the most significant trends to consider.
Microsoft released the first-gen Zune in 2006, an MP3 player that looked to compete with Apple’s largely dominant line of iPods. Apple wasn’t the first to make a portable MP3 player, although it was the first to make one everyone wanted. Zooming out, Zune’s ultimate defeat belies a larger pattern of behavior.
The firm’s research indicates that VR headsets have been the main source of growth in unit sales to date, and although this trend is expected to continue – particularly with smartphone-powered mobile headsets – there is also an expectations that the next generation of HMDs will ignite a new wave of consumer interest. billion in 2022.
The Quest Pro only continued this trend ; the high-end headset brings a range of impressive improvements to the hardware along with new sensing capabilities, but its new features are significantly hampered by an undercooked software offering. Of course the single biggest elephant in the room has been and will continue to be Apple.
My favorite ones have been: Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed that the next PSVR headset will be called PSVR 2 and will feature 2K x 2K per eye, up to 120 Hz framerate, and 110° FOV. New rumors on Apple and Meta devices. This is why companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft and Meta are exploring similar technologies.
But hey, let me play this game anyway, so here you are my predictions for virtual reality in 2021 based on the trends and the anticipations that we had at the end of 2020! I expect all these trends to continue in 2021, for a year that will see the growth of the technology on all its sides (software and hardware).
In total, I counted something like 32 games, which is ok to start with, but then Sony should be fast in collecting more content to not make the PSVR2 players get bored fast for the lack of playable games. But still, the fact that all the PSVR 1 content won’t be available for the new headset gives Sony a good challenge on the content side.
In my opinion, these are the trends to keep an eye on: The continuous growth of the market Establishment of VR in enterprise settings Incremental technical evolution of devices Blurring of the line between AR and VR High-quality content (especially gaming) 5G over-hype Standardization given by OpenXR Others (LBVR, WebVR, SocialXR).
I’m trying to keep expectations in place not because I want to be negative about VR (I’m a strong believer in the tech), but because in the past I’ve already seen that trend of setting unrealistic expectations and then writing “VR is dead” the day after when the market of course haven’t reached those results.
Or it could be the excitement about new headsets coming from Sony, Apple, Pico, and HTC that is keeping potential buyers on the sidelines. Despite the seemingly downward trend, a flood of new VR headsets is coming from Sony, Pico , Apple, HTC, and more.

One of the major trends that patent activity has captured is the transformation from merely entertainment-based AR/VR usage towards more useful, inclusive, and practical applications. People who expressed interest ahead of time via Sony’s official website received emails with pre-order windows, and many have already placed their pre-orders. This is a positive moment for consumer smartglasses and Vuzix is confirming this trend.
Then the whole Metaverse trend began to take off. The same goes for Valve, Apple, and Sony, whose established presence here would allow them to cut into the high-end section of the market without much difficulty. Some were VR-related, and some were not. We almost disbanded. In fact, we were once on the verge of it.
This approach has attracted Sony Pictures, Miller Lite, and Porsche as clients for AR campaigns. Apple specifically has done a really good job of getting accurate scale in AR,” said Murphy-Chutorian “There are things like measuring if my suitcase fits inside a box, or virtual tape measures.
