Bernard Kress, principal optical architect on Microsoft’s HoloLens team, has left the company to take on the role of Director of XR Engineering at the recently formed Google Labs. Now Kress is back at Mountain View working on Google’s next AR headset.
The Microsoft Research Team revealed a new pair of augmented reality glasses today that offer an exciting form factor, even if their performance isn’t up to snuff. What’s described in the paper are “novel designs for virtual and augmented reality near-eye displays based on phase-only holographic projection.”
The company now plans to use holography to make inexpensive transparent displays for augmented reality smartglasses. We’ve used lenses for hundreds of years, and we hope holography will give us a new way to manipulate light.”. Akonia is not unique in its attempt to use holography in this manner.
