But when it comes to AR, the hope is that the tech will be a transient and beneficial addition to reality, rather than taking over your world completely. LeapMotion , a maker of hand-tracking software and hardware, has been experimenting with exactly that, and is teasing some very interesting results.

LeapMotion dreams big with an ambitious new project that could open ‘alternative dimensions of reality, layered over the physical world.’. Mirrorworlds immerse you without removing you from the space. You are still present, but on a different plane of reality. We can pick up a pencil, and use it as a magic wand.
These augmented reality devices are manufactured by Chinese company Realmax and are characterized by a very wide field of view. While many other AR glasses (like Nreal Light or HoloLens 2 ) have a Field Of View in the 50° ballpark, RealMax glasses have always had ones above 100° , for a more immersive augmented experience.

Hand tracking technology company LeapMotion has built a stunningly fluid augmented reality ping-pong game that not only showcases the capabilities of its open source Project North Star augmented reality headset, but also demonstrates how artificial intelligence can elevate immersive experiences.
Keiichi Matsuda went from being a dystopian filmmaker to becoming the Vice President of Design at hand-tracking company LeapMotion. LeapMotion recently announced their open source AR HMD reference design called Project North Star , which has a 95° wide by 70° high field of view with 65% stereo overlap & 1,600 × 1,440 per eye.

For the Fectar AR and VR content creation platform users, creating XR content with hand tracking feature has just become simpler and easier. Focused on creating AR and VR spaces for education, training, onboarding, events, and more, and aimed at non-technical users, the company provides a cross-platform, no-code AR/VR building tool.
DigiLens , a developer of transparent waveguide display technology, is creating a reference headset aimed at wide FOV AR with hand-tracking, dubbed AR HUD. So by that measure, Pimax over-delivered at CES 2019 with its LeapMotion bundle featuring 8K VR headset with built-in speakers, 200° FOV and optional eye tracking being developed in partnership with 7invensun. These are ergonomically comfortable with new industrial design, and come in both a thumbstick and trackpad version.

While it’s exciting to start seeing 6DOF standalone VR headsets like the Vive Focus and Mirage Solo, both unfortunately include a 3DOF controller which in many cases functions as an immersion barrier compared to a fully 6DOF VR system. As the XR landscape continues to grow, accelerating towards an expected value of $300 billion by 2024, immersive technology is evolving at an amazing rate. Increasingly, vendors and innovators are searching for new and improved ways to immerse users in unique experiences, using powerful and disruptive technology.
Side note that AR will be much bigger than VR, in both the diversity of use cases and market size (analysts predict $30B for VR versus $90B for AR by 2020), but I still believe that most homes will have a dedicated VR space for total immersion. There are a number of ways to create your own virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) app/videogame. Today, Charles River Analytics – a developer of intelligent systems solutions – has announced the launch of the Virtuoso Software Development Kit (VSDK), to aid speedy development of AR and VR experiences.
It can be used both with a standard screen or an AR/VR headset, but I think that virtual reality is where this device really shines. This definitely opens a lot of doors for more natural interactions in immersive worlds. I could see how this can be used in places like virtual touch screen and other screen-based interaction in VR.
VR, AR and hand tracking are often considered to be futuristic technologies, but they also have the potential to be the easiest to use. We also have some new interactions that are native to immersive media: the sphere handle and the hand effector itself. This is the core of our mission at LeapMotion.
At LeapMotion, we’ve seen our fair share of impressive motion-controlled robots that will one day bring about the robocalypse. Future videos will demonstrate the laser system, sonar, visual system and face recognition, and the LeapMotion input – including a future “snapshot” gesture. Happy Halloween!
