Passthrough camera access is a hot topic in the XR community right now and while the positions of Meta, Apple, and Pico are known, everyone is wondering what Google will do with Android XR. Meta, Pico, HTC, then Apple… all of them prevented the developers from accessing the camera frames. But what about Google and Android XR?
Fasten your seatbelts and read this article. I will tell more in a future summary article about my experience there, but for now, just let me tell you that among the fantastic people that I met, there have been the guys and the girls at HTC’s headquarters in Taipei. It’s very modern and clean.
Today during the Vive Developers Conference in Beijing, HTC revealed the Vive Focus, a standalone VR headset with inside-out positional tracking. Update (11/14/17): HTC has confirmed to Road to VR that the company is cancelling plans to bring a Daydream-based version of the Vive Focus headset to Western markets, including the US and Europe.

Ever since Tilt Brush from Google first released earlier this year on Steam with official support for the HTC Vive, thousands of people have created amazing works of art. Today, Google is taking the TiltBrush art scene a step further by announcing the Tilt Brush Artist in Residence Program.

One of the smartest ideas ever had by HTC has been the invention of the Vive Tracker: a little puck that you can attach to an object so that to track it inside virtual reality.
