Partnering with Microsoft Turn 10 Studios, Honda’s R vs R competition pit an actual professional driver against a professional YouTube gamer in a head-to-head mixed reality race unlike anything we’ve seen before. The only difference is that while Graham sat in an actual Type R on an actual racetrack, Jeakins sat in a simulator.

Students from Georgia Tech are working with Microsoft and Walmart to increase efficiency in warehouses using Mixed Reality. Much has been made of the use of robots to increase efficiency in warehouses —with web retailers such as Amazon announcing significant investment in that area.

At the time the prototype used a VR headset combined with a Microsoft Kinect for tracking. This is only starting to become practical through improved consumer tracking technology. A prototype of Project Arena shown last year was a very different beast. “[Improved input] has changed the concept in some ways,” Kraver explained.

The event should have been hosted in Atlanta, with a little VR spinoff, but now that real event has been canceled, the whole event will be in VR. There will be various iterations of these prototypes and this research will be very important for Microsoft also for the design of the next generation of HoloLens.
