Prior to Avegant, Ed spent nearly 15 years working in microfabrication and MEMs technologies, including 5 years focused on applying MEMs to brain-control interfaces.
Waveguides are not a new technology, per se. Waveguide displays are made using the same technology that allows a unidirectional wave of light to be guided down a fiber optic cable. If a paying client requested a light-field, it can safely be assumed they would build it to order, with their existing waveguide layering technology.
Virtual reality has figured prominently at the event in recent years of course, quickly rising to become one of the shows hottest technologies. The following year at CES 2014, Oculus had to share the immersive technology limelight with a slew of new startups who had appeared in the wake of Oculus’ success.
It doesn’t burn me, because it’s a computer image displayed through a new kind of headset prototype built by Avegant, a Silicon Valley-based startup. Avegant calls it “light field.” With light field technology we’re finally beyond the bar for what’s good enough for a mass market experience,” Tang said.
