The Microsoft Research Team revealed a new pair of augmentedreality glasses today that offer an exciting form factor, even if their performance isn’t up to snuff. What’s described in the paper are “novel designs for virtual and augmentedreality near-eye displays based on phase-only holographic projection.”
The company now plans to use holography to make inexpensive transparent displays for augmentedreality smartglasses. Augmentedreality is expected to be a $90 billion market by 2020, according to tech advisor Digi-Capital. The company has 165 patents, including a few dozen related to augmentedreality.
Bernard Kress, principal optical architect on Microsoft’s HoloLens team, has left the company to take on the role of Director of XR Engineering at the recently formed Google Labs. Around 300 people are purportedly working on Project Iris, however Google plans to expand by “hundreds more.”

Here is an update on my quest to stay on top of all things “holo:” HoloLamp and RealView “Live Holography.” RealView Holographic AugmentedReality. Details remain to be seen, but any advancements to computer-generated holography would be highly welcome. Or, in other words, try before you buy.
