A new FCC listing appears for an HTC Vive headset. And in fact, a new request to FCC for a new device has arrived from HTC. FCC certifications are requested before releasing an electronic device in the US (to certify that it is safe to be used), so this is a clear sign that HTC is going to release a new headset soon.
I myself have written a hugely detailed post on my blog to teach people how to get started with Passthrough Camera Access. Then the management of the camera will happen through the functionalities exposed by Camera2 in Android and WebCamTexture in Unity, which are the ones developers have always used with smartphones.
Announced last week via an official update to the Vive developer blog , Vive Pro developers now have full control of the headset’s front-facing stereo cameras to develop their own mixed reality experiences. Early on the Rift development kit supported Mac, but it became clear Apple computers weren’t optimized with graphics cards that could drive high-quality VR and VR support essentially stalled. That seems to be changing though as Apple begins supporting higher end graphics cards as well as external graphics processors.

This would be pretty disruptive, because up to now every standalone headset has been a walled garden with its own store and hardware, with the only exception being HTC trying to distribute its Viveport store to some other Chinese devices. Basically, Google could try to be for standalone devices what Steam has been for the PC VR ones.
