LeapMotion, the pioneer in optical hand-tracking, has been acquired by Ultrahaptics, the enterprise-focused immersive haptics company. According to the Wall Street Journal , Ultrahaptics reportedly acquired LeapMotion for approximately $30 million. Image courtesy LeapMotion.
One of the first accessories for AR/VR I had the opportunity to work on is the LeapMotion hands tracking controller : I made some cool experiments and prototypes with it and the Oculus Rift DK2. LeapMotion has also been the first important company I have interviewed in this blog.
At Facebook Connect this week , Facebook has: Released the powerful Oculus Quest 2 , powered by Snapdragon XR2, and with a 4K display. You can finally buy the LeapMotion v2 accessory. The time for us XR developers to buy a LeapMotion 2 has finally come. And the fact that it was not on sale was frustrating.
Ultraleap is the company born from the acquisition of LeapMotion by Ultrahaptics and it has always worked towards offering optimal hands tracking solutions for the XR market. Ultraleap has also made significant changes to the tracking platform to be able to extend hand-tracking to different platforms and hardware.
This is because LeapMotion has announced its v4 version of the tracking runtime and with it three demos to showcase the new tracking functionalities: Cat Explorer, Particles, and Paint. Cat Explorer is an educational app made to show you all the anatomy of a cat and it obviously employs LeapMotion as the only medium of interaction.
Considering that Facebook is very smart also in leaking misleading info (as it has happened with the “Monterey” headset ), this can also be a move from Menlo Park to create hype for the upcoming Oculus Connect 6 and the AR glasses that will be teased there. The shape of the controllers is slightly different than the one of the Oculus Touch, though, and there is a ring that surrounds the wrist of the user.
