The specifications on paper look nice, and for sure the one between Google and Samsung looks like a strong partnership. As a Unity developer (also knowledgeable of VRChat), I’m not surprised at all, honestly.
The success of the Ray-Ban Meta has triggered the smartglasses hype: when I was at CES, I saw many startups launching their AI-powered smartglasses and we have heard rumors of all the major brands (including Apple and Samsung) working on their own smartglasses devices, too. But as usual, I warn you to be careful of the hype.
I mean, all UE developers, we Unity developers felt like being in a party where everyone is making out and you’re just there sipping a coke. Unity has still on its side the facility of use and the better support for mobile platforms, but I think it has to answer very soon to the hype created by UE. All of this in less than 1 year.

An older, but interesting example of marker-based AR is the PlayStation 3 Wonderbook, a gaming ‘peripheral’ that allows players to view a spell book on their screen. The book rotates and moves when they pick up the device and move it around. However, there are some missing features depending on the platform you’re on.
The most robust experience I found was called HoloTour, which was similar to the “Welcome to Virtual Reality” videos I’ve seen on the Samsung Gear VR. This is a very good thing in my book. And, well…that’s really about it right now while the development world is busy making stuff.

After so much time teasing it, Google has finally announced Android XR, the version of Android for XR devices, and gave hands-on demos of the headset it is building with Samsung and Qualcomm. Google is truly betting on the mix between MR and AI , not just on MR. First ever live demo of Samsungs mixed reality headset running Android XR!
We are at the same level of Vive Focus or Vive Pro… probably the display is the same made by Samsung. This is the same chip of the Samsung S8 and it is not the latest available for VR: Qualcomm has already released the 845 VR reference design. For instance, in Unity, the Oculus Utilities plugin is the same for PC, Go and GearVR.

Alan: Yeah, I think device management with VR is a bit of a pain in the butt, because you have to keep them charged, especially with the Samsung Gear VR's great, because you can just swap out the phones.

Another brand I’m very curious about is Samsung : sooner or later, it should announce something, either in VR or in AR. Samsung has always released interesting products (think about the GearVR or the Odyssey), and it would be cool for it to release a standalone headset with mixed reality features. Technology.
