Just last week we learned about Facebook’s plan for a $200 headset that occupies the low end of the market while Google continues work on a six degrees of freedom standalone headset.

While HTC is only releasing the headset in China, and not in the West as previously announced, the company is using Vive Focus as the impetus for its own mobile VR platform that aims to resolve what HTC calls a “highly fragmented” mobile VR market in China, and become a common platform and storefront across disparate hardware vendors.

Yesterday for the first time I have attended the Vive Ecosystem Conference in Shenzhen, China! The price: 5,699 RMB in China, $799 in the West. In China, instead, it is also being sold to consumers and this is where the multi-modality should kick in. It has been really special to announce our content directly from China!

Today at its Vive Ecosystem Conference 2018 in China, HTC said that the 3DOF Vive Focus controller will see a 6DOF mode, and further said that the headset will soon include controller-less hand-tracking for gesture input. 3DOF to 6DOF Controller Upgrade.

Earlier this year HTC became an official partner with Google in producing a Daydream-based standalone VR headset under the Vive brand. It looks like it will access HTC’s storefront, called Viveport, to get to virtual worlds rather than Google Play. Graylin, China Regional President of Vive, HTC, in a prepared statement.
