I know that many of you won’t be excited by this news, but remember the Vive Tracker is one of the most successful accessories ever created by HTC. Come and visit it!
A new FCC listing appears for an HTC Vive headset. And in fact, a new request to FCC for a new device has arrived from HTC. FCC certifications are requested before releasing an electronic device in the US (to certify that it is safe to be used), so this is a clear sign that HTC is going to release a new headset soon.
Today at Computex 2017, the annual IT expo held in Taipei, Taiwan, Microsoft revealed more from their line-up of affordable Windows ‘Mixed Reality’ headsets, including Asus’ headset and an updated design from Dell. Microsoft says the headset is designed by the same team that creates their premium XPS and Alienware PCs.
HTC was seemingly the odd one out back at the initial announcement, but this week the company joined the group in support of the standard. Representing most of the VR industry’s core hardware and software makers, NVIDIA, AMD, Valve, Oculus, and Microsoft were the initial members of the VirtualLink Consortium.
In a keynote today Microsoft is revealing a long-awaited missing piece of its Windows mixed reality platform – motion controllers. According to Microsoft, the controllers would be shown on stage at its keynote but wouldn’t be available for hands-on demos at its Build developer conference this week.
Looks like the rumors are true; Google just announced it’s working on its very own standalone VR headsets at its I/O conference. Google’s VP of VR Clay Bavor introduced this new initiative towards the end of the conference. Google also confirmed it’s working on a standalone headset with HTC and another with Lenovo.

Press conferences have been light on jaw dropping announcements and games are running a little thin on originality and inspiration. It was Microsoft that dropped the ball the hardest. This time last year Microsoft was telling us that the console, then codenamed Project Scorpio, would be capable of high-fidelity VR.

Last August the Virtual Reality Developers Conference (VRDC) published its first report on the state of the VR industry based off of a survey for developers. Apple’s executives hinted that more announcements would be coming related to VR during its developer conference, including VR workflows so creators can make VR content with the Mac. That seems to be changing though as Apple begins supporting higher end graphics cards as well as external graphics processors.

A pioneer who helped kickstart VR’s renaissance is driving the strategy for Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality platform, spanning both HoloLens and a collection of VR headsets rolling out later this year. ” This is Acer’s kit, the first Windows VR headset to roll out to developers from Microsoft’s partners.
Microsoft is set to make its move on the VR market later this year when it launches a range of headsets made in partnerships with other companies for its Windows Holographic operating system. Alex Kipman, Technical Fellow at the company, confirmed as much to UploadVR in an interview at the 2017 Game Developers Conference this week.
Oculus has its very own press conference where it revealed the final version of the Rift and announced Touch. One such announcement was from Microsoft. It doesn’t appear that the app is available for the HTC Vive, even though Microsoft stated that it was working with Valve during its own E3 conference in 2015.
All these four awards are decided at the conference. Alvin Graylin, HTC China President, presented the Auggie for Best Head-Worn Device. Microsoft Principal Program Manager, Shelley Peterson, presented the award for Best Societal impact, saying that “our finalists have demonstrated that they are building a kinder world.”.
Microsoft’s VR headsets, made in partnership with major companies, remain shrouded in mystery at the moment, but select developers will start getting a peak behind the curtain later this month. We’ll next see the headsets at the company’s Build developer conference in May, and after that we’d expect to hear more at E3.
