As fears of a Coronavirus pandemic continue to dominate the news cycle, Facebook today confirmed that the company will not be holding its somewhat-annual F8 developers conference this year over concerns of a potential outbreak. Sony, Microsoft, EA, and several other major names are reportedly skipping this year’s conference as well.
We haven’t had the E3 where Sony doesn’t shut up about VR like it once did 3D, for example, nor the E3 where it seems like everyone and their mothers are making VR games like they once were mobile or motion controlled experiences. It was Microsoft that dropped the ball the hardest.
As usual, Microsoft is firing first with its press conference this E3, but it’s doing so even earlier than anticipated. After a string of cancellations by larger vendors amid the worldwide coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19), this year’s annual Game Developers Conference (GDC) was postponed. Now, GDC organizers say a summer conference will kick off in its place. SEE ALSO Facebook Cancels F8 Developer Conference Over Coronavirus Concerns.
Perhaps most notably thus far, Microsoft has moved away from their typical conference showing. Usually, we’d get Microsoft’s conference early on Monday with Sony taking the late slot of that same day, but MS has moved an entire day earlier and will potentially set the tone for the week starting on Sunday.

CES 2017 is officially “begins” tomorrow but the behemoth conference is already revving up in Las Vegas. The pre-show press conferences have already begun and that means the big virtual reality news is already breaking. What We Know: Microsoft is at the show in a multitude of capacities. Vive (HTC).
Microsoft is showing some commitment to the idea of Windows Mixed Reality (formally known as Windows Holographic) with not just a single headset, but with five headsets. Back in February, Sony announced that they sold 915,000 PlayStation VR headsets since it launched in mid-October, while Microsoft focused on their HoloLens MR headset.
While E3 2019 may officially be in the books, it appears as though Sony is only just getting started. Launched originally on Microsoft Windows back in 2017, Luna arrives on PlayStation VR tomorrow ( June 18th ) in North America followed by European release June 19th. PROJECT LUX from Spicy Tails. Sony holds its press conference at 6PM PT on Monday, June 12th. Up until yesterday we had very little idea of what the company had planned on the VR side, but we do at least now know it’s set to talk about some new games at its conference. Will PlayStation knock it out of the park? Let’s take a look. What We Know.

Sony takes centre stage in LA as the pre-E3 press conferences come to a close. Sony’s Pre-E3 show kicks off at 6pm PST ( your local time here ) and the gaming giant has a hard act to follow in terms of VR news in the wake of revelations from Bethesda , Ubisoft and even Microsoft.
Not that that’s a problem for Sony, with a tidy 50 million units sold in just over three years on the market. But all the shrewdness Sony has displayed in the past few years makes the risk of PlayStation VR all the more baffling. Sony had its work cut out if it was going to get the ball rolling, and E3 was only a few months away.
Sony just added itself to that list. Sony hasn’t said anything else about this year’s briefing, but you can expect to see the latest updates on PS4 and, hopefully, PSVR games at the show. If this E3 showing is half as eventful for PSVR then it’ll still be one to remember.
This mention of AR confirms that Facebook is working on AR glasses, and in my opinion is also a hint to the fact that most probably they will be teased at the next Oculus Connect (the conference that, according to Oculus, should show the “future of AR and VR”). At it’s pre-E3 2016 conference, Microsoft announced the long awaited shift of its console model. Microsoft did not disclose the exact refresh cycle strategy, but we would not be surprised if the company decides to use E3 as the place where their annual or bi-annual refreshes will be announced.
