The industry has been experiencing a boom in recent years with hundreds of startups and heavy investment from tech giants including Google, Apple, Samsung, and Facebook. In January of 2017, FOVE, a Japanese VR startup, released the first eye-tracking VR headset. Despite all the activity, AR/VR hardware remains relatively crude.
According to The Eye Tribe’s website, its technology, allows “eye control for consumer devices that enables simplified and enhanced user experiences. The Eye Tribe intends to become the leading provider of eye control technology by licensing to vendors in the consumer technology industry.”
He works at FOVE which is making a VR headset with eye-tracking, but wanted to speak to me on his own behalf about some of the deeper philosophical questions and conceptual frameworks around the types of intimate data that will become available to VR headsets. Samsung VR is now somewhat similar to the App Store or Google Play store in that it’s where you can find the latest content for virtual reality products. The system determines your body pose, and you can move through an environment just by leaning where you want to move, similar to the way you lean to control a hoverboard.
