And though our hands-on with the headset exclusively used hand-tracking and eye-tracking input, the company says it’s also making first-party motion controllers which will be natively supported as part of Android XR. While this is confirmed, details here are slim too. It looks to be leaning toward the latter.

The controllers would be sold separately and would be fully optional, mostly dedicated to people who want to play games requiring controllers on the Apple Vision Pro. Currently, Sony does not sell the controllers separately by the headset, but if the partnership is confirmed, it will start to do so. I think this is great news.

These glasses should be built in partnership with Google and Qualcomm and have a similar form factor to the successful Ray-Ban Meta glasses.
But could greater impact come from the biggest ad giant of all: Google? But the concept of 3D/AR models populating search results took a step forward with Google’s Swirl rollout. Sony unveils the new controllers of the PSVR2. One month after the reveal of a “next-gen VR headset for the Playstation” (whose name is not known, but I guess it will be PSVR2), Sony has revealed one important detail of its new VR system: the controllers. The controllers will be given to selected developers very soon.
Samsung’s 2023 Unpacked event was all about the company’s Galaxy S23 hardware, although at the end of its hour-long presentation the South Korean tech giant announced it was working with Qualcomm and Google to develop an XR device. Notably, Samsung hasn’t released a VR product since the launch of the PC VR headset Odyssey+.
Hugo Swart, previous head of Qualcomm’s XR division, announced he’s joined Google where he’ll lead the company’s XR Ecosystem Strategy and Technology efforts. Google is also rumored to be developing a “Micro XR” platform for XR glasses, which is said to use a prototyping platform internally known as “Betty.”

Open Blocks, the open source rebirth of Google's Blocks, is now available on Quest in early access. Blocks by Google released in 2017 as a PC VR tool for low-poly 3D modeling with tracked controllers, and was one of the first VR-native 3D creation tools.
This puts Meta in an entirely new position as a platform holder, as it now seems the company is trying to beat Google at its own game. Apple vs. Google. Google: Keep on Daydreaming After having abandoned its ill-fated standalone XR platform Daydream in 2019, Google took a giant step back from VR that it never quite recovered from.
According to Meta CTO Andrew ‘Boz’ Bosworth, Google simply isn’t interested in bringing the full Play Store of apps to Quest. “They just need to ship the APK to us, and maybe they need to do some light modification depending on how the control scheme would work, but not necessarily much after that.”
The approach chosen by Meta is similar to the one that Google promised to take with Android XR. Access to cameras will require the application to ask permission from the user (that so is in control). I have no idea what will happen with all the hardware that has been sold and all the headsets that integrated an Ultraleap controller.
The unboxing shows that the device has a very simple packaging, which includes both the headset and the controllers. This confirms that the headset is going to ship with controllers and that there is no charging station in the original box. The video was later republished by “VR Panda” on Twitter.

A good thing about this approach by Meta is that it is the same one used on Android phones and it is the same one that Google will follow with Android XR according to what they told me. Giving control to the user regarding his/her privacy is always the best approach and personally, I’m a big fan of it.
Currently, entering your password and username or typing out a message in VR means awkwardly selecting keys using your motion controllers. Developers have explored potential solutions in the past, such as Google Daydream’s ultra-fun Drum Keys or Logitech’s VR compatible keyboards. Unfortunately, typing is not one of them.
While the Play for Dream MR headset is currently running its own flavor of Android as its underlying operating system, the company tells Road to VR that it expects to adopt Google’s own Android XR platform eventually. Alternatively the company could wait until a future headset to make its transition.
