Google and Magic Leap today announced a “strategic technology partnership.” ” The move shows Google seeking to gain ground to keep up with the likes of Meta, Apple, and others in a race to control the AR headset market. Google has had several starts and stops in the XR space.
The controllers would be sold separately and would be fully optional, mostly dedicated to people who want to play games requiring controllers on the Apple Vision Pro. Currently, Sony does not sell the controllers separately by the headset, but if the partnership is confirmed, it will start to do so. I think this is great news.
But did you know that before there was Pokémon GO , Niantic launched a sci-fi-based AR game called Ingress Prime that used OpenStreetMap and Google Maps to create a citywide geocaching game of capture the flag? The Enlightened want to use XM to evolve humankind, while the Resistance looks to control XM and use it to enslave humanity.
Hugo Swart, previous head of Qualcomm’s XR division, announced he’s joined Google where he’ll lead the company’s XR Ecosystem Strategy and Technology efforts. Google is also rumored to be developing a “Micro XR” platform for XR glasses, which is said to use a prototyping platform internally known as “Betty.”

Enter FinchShift and Chirp, two different solutions to the same problem: bringing 6DOF controllers to Vive Focus. At CES last month, I got a chance to try out both of the officially supported 6DOF controllers for Vive Focus back-to-back, FinchShift from Finch Technologies and Chirp from TDK’s Chirp Microsystems.

Google’s directly competing services aren’t on Vision Pro, but that doesn’t mean the company isn’t doing business on Apple’s headset altogether, as it has now brought two of its most influential VR games to Vision Pro. This technically makes for the first Google-owned apps to release on Vision Pro.
The headset, code-named ‘Del Mar’, will supposedly use a ‘Jedi’ controller. The Verge has also retrieved information from a Google cache of developer portal pages which add additional details. . Along with several references to Oculus Touch and GearVR controllers, there’s also mention of an additional “Jedi” controller.
