10 years after the launch of LeapMotion—which garnered praise for offering some of the best hand-tracking in the industry—the company has announced a next-generation version of the device which now supports standalone XR headsets in addition to Windows and MacOS.
One of the first accessories for AR/VR I had the opportunity to work on is the LeapMotion hands tracking controller : I made some cool experiments and prototypes with it and the Oculus Rift DK2. LeapMotion has also been the first important company I have interviewed in this blog.
Anyone that has used mobile VR knows that controllers are nice, but unless you can ‘see’ your hands and interact with your surroundings with your hands, the immersion is lost. The real improvements are increased performance, power savings and support for LeapMotion.

Recently I had a big issue with my VR controllers in SteamVR (both with Oculus and Vive) and so I’m writing this post to try to help you in solving it. And when I put the headset on, I could see the grey intro environment, with all the controllers moving regularly. , but sometimes it is still tricky and problematic. WTF SteamVR.
Earlier this year HTC became an official partner with Google in producing a Daydream-based standalone VR headset under the Vive brand. One of the biggest drawbacks of HTC Vive headsets with regard to Oculus Rift are the controllers: while Oculus Touch is ergonomic and can emulate the hands quite well, Vive has controllers that are quite big and are usable only as wands. What if you want to experiment with AI and MR and you don’t want to wait for Meta/Pico/HTC to provide access to the camera feed? If you use a LeapMotioncontroller, you should be able to grab the feed of its cameras according to its docs.
Because if Apple is just going to repeat the same use cases of the HTC Vive and Meta Quest 2, but selling it at $3000, it is just going to fail spectacularly. Its controllers have no ring and no onboard cameras. That’s why Quest Touch Pro controllers are better. But the big question is the “how”. For what purpose?
Launched back in 2012, LeapMotion first introduced us to their new way of interacting with computers in three dimensions. At the time, the LeapMotion sensor sat on your desk or was built into your keyboard, allowing for natural hand and finger movement tracking. There was one thing — the device never really caught on.
At this point, there is another question that every one of us is making: is this a controlled leak by Valve itself? Their special Touch controllers, which theoretically let the user explore the VR world with their hands, aren't shipping until later this year. But LeapMotion has a universal mounting kit for their motion sensor that lets you control nearly any virtual reality headset with gestures.
FlyInside FSX , the crowdfunded VR plugin for Microsoft Flight Simulator X (2006) , was built well before first-party VR motioncontrollers existed, developed back in the DK2-era of 2015 as an ad hoc way of jumping into an already highly-detailed flight sim.

Smith has been using an HTC Vive for the project though, instead of the kit’s position-tracked controllers, he can be seen on News 4 Jax using a LeapMotion sensor for hand-tracking. This allows him to more realistically handle the virtual tumor.

Intel Teases Depth-Sensing HTC Vive For Developer Conference An Intel engineer tweeted a tease suggesting VR is going to be a major theme at the company’s developer conference in a couple weeks. The tease is a photo of a unicorn-shaped modification to the HTC Vive that uses a series of cameras to sense the depth of surrounding objects.
But what sparks the biggest debates are the controllers , with the thumbsticks that are not perfect and don’t click in all directions. Everyone agrees that they are great controllers, but not everyone agrees on the fact that they are truly revolutionary. HTC has released some interesting statistics on the VR market.
I had a chance to try out the Manus VR hand-tracked controller on the expo floor of GDC this year and saw that there a couple of really strong use cases for having your hands and fingers tracked in VR. So I expect to see the next iteration remove the stopgap solution of attaching a SteamVR controller onto the back of your arm.
This seems crazy to me: HTC has always been blamed for its high prices (well, $1400 for the Vive Pro was a bit too much…) but the Vive Focus Plus , that is an enterprise device, costs $799… $200 less than the Business Quest! The controllers are great and let you finally also throw objects in VR and give you all five fingers.

Bandai Namco’s ‘ Project i Can ‘ has made the Anywhere Door a (virtual) reality using the HTC Vive, LeapMotion, and a few simple props tracked with attached Vive controllers. A VR take on this idea uses simple props to make a unique VR experience.
With my left motioncontroller (in this case Oculus Touch) I can change the tools in my hand to suit a variety of different needs. With the revolve tool I’m able to drag shapes in a fixed straight line, editing their width with the controllers as I go.
Markers can be used to define where to show virtual elements, and in the demo that I tried were used to show virtual Chinese artworks in a room; LeapMotion device on Realmax glasses. RealMax can mount a LeapMotion device, so you have the power of using naturally your hands to interact with AR elements. I liked it a lot.

VRTK, as other existing VR interaction toolkits, is built around logic input from controllers. Developers will have to build or find an extra module to make the bridge between the analogic hand tracking, and the logic controller input. The system is technically compatible with hand tracking, but it is not natively supported.
But that first version of the glove required a third-party tracking system like LeapMotion in order to translate the movement of the user’s hands into virtual reality. The latest Gloveone prototype integrates its own tracking system which utilizes IMUs arranged along each finger and along the user’s arm and torso.
