These controllers look familiar. Microsoft brought their latest mixed reality efforts front and center Thursday at its Build conference in Seattle. On top of partner device and price announcements that challenge the likes of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, Microsoft also unveiled new controllers as part of mixed reality headset bundles.
I’m in Seattle. Depending on the workout, Chacon would use either an Oculus Go, Oculus Quest, or an HTC Vive to pump up his cardio. Some workouts required the tetherless 6DOF VR from headsets like the Quest, such as working out in 3D boxing ring ; more simplistic exercises, such as burpees , worked best with the Oculus Go.
VR adoption is accelerating thanks to the Oculus Quest. Because even if Oculus sold 100 million VR headsets, but no third-party developer could make $1 million in revenue, then it wouldn’t be a platform; it would be a successful product for Oculus, but it wouldn’t be a viable platform to create an ecosystem of successful developers.
There was just one catch though: people hoping to use SteamVR Tracking in their devices would need to attend a $3,000 introductory course in Seattle. Going forward we may find that HTC primarily drives the development of the Vive headset while Valve—who worked closely with HTC on Vive—retains control of the underlying tracking technology.
Today at the Steam Dev Days conference in Seattle, Valve is showing off brand new prototypes of its Steam VR controllers. Today’s HTC Vive controllers are bulky compared to what’s coming. When the first consumer version of the Oculus Rift was launched in the spring, it was disappointingly bundled with a Microsoft Xbox controller – and we’ve eagerly been awaiting the native Touch Controllers. The Touch controllers feel like little magical half-doughnuts and are smooth and intuitive.
The Oculus Quest was a hit. At this year’s year’s E3 conference, Facebook’s Vice President of Special Gaming Strategies Jason Rubin told audiences that the Oculus Quest was seeing “console-like” engagement from users, selling $5 million worth of content in first 2 weeks since the device started shipping back in May.
