One of the first accessories for AR/VR I had the opportunity to work on is the LeapMotion hands tracking controller : I made some cool experiments and prototypes with it and the Oculus Rift DK2. LeapMotion has also been the first important company I have interviewed in this blog. If you want, you can find it here below!
You can finally buy the LeapMotion v2 accessory. The time for us XR developers to buy a LeapMotion 2 has finally come. LeapMotion 1 has been used by almost every developer and researcher , both in VR and not. Yes, the price is higher than the cheap LeapMotion 1, but this is also a far better device.
In my unboxing video, you may see that I’ve found an additional LeapMotion v1 controller + LeapMotion mount for RealMax + USB-C cable for LeapMotion. Since having a 3DOF controller with a 6DOF headset is weird (HTC and Lenovo know this well), RealMax has decided to add also support for LeapMotion.
Today it’s a great day for virtual reality: at WCVRI conference, HTC has just announced a kit to provide 6 DOF controllers for Vive Focus and has showcased a hands-tracking technology for the Vive Pro ! The Venture Reality Fund and of courseHTC. — Alvin Wang Graylin (@AGraylin) October 18, 2018. Really fantastic.
Of course, since I’m not a security expert, I do have not a definitive answer for you. What if you want to experiment with AI and MR and you don’t want to wait for Meta/Pico/HTC to provide access to the camera feed? And recently LeapMotion has become compatible with standalone headsets like Pico ones.
Of course you are, because you know that I will use the word “Half Life” in the article… so keep reading! In subsequent comments, 2flock clarified that someone just dropped these photos in his inbox and that of course, he has shared them to the whole VR community. But what do we know about it?
Object tracking : Hyperion allows the LeapMotion Controller 2 camera to track AR Markers (also known as fiducial markers) enabling tracking of any object. The price of this device is $600 0 and it is of course aimed at the enterprise sector. I believe there will be many use cases for this.
From my tests, the image on the screen appears slightly distorted, so there will be something to fix on HTC’s side. Better integration with HTC phones. Yesterday HTC has also unveiled its new flagship phone, the HTC U12+. The Vive Focus and its friend the HTC U12+ phone (Image by HTC). Image by HTC).
The great news is that SenseGlove has been so kind as to send me a review unit some days ago, and of course I’ve made many extensive tests so that to write a detailed review for you! This way your gloves are powered and can communicate with your PC; Setup of the HTC Vive system. you can feel when a drilling machine is on).
Otherwise, contact HTC support to have your Vive fixed (good luck with that). Of course, this didn’t work for me. The system will guide you in updating the firmware if any new firmware is available; How to update the firmware on your HTC Vive devices. Of course, no luck. In my case, of course not.
It seems cool, but I would like to try it to believe in it: all the times that someone promised me some kind of sensory magic, it never turned out so good as they told me (like with the phantom touch sensation that LeapMotion told me about ). Vive Facial Tracker works also with non-HTC headsets. As long as it works….
One of the biggest drawbacks of HTC Vive headsets with regard to Oculus Rift are the controllers: while Oculus Touch is ergonomic and can emulate the hands quite well, Vive has controllers that are quite big and are usable only as wands. Areas where the force sensors are installed (Image by Valve). Oculus Touch Controllers. Knuckles EV2.
Of course, since he has not an Apple HMD, the only thing he could obtain was the screen splitting in two on his phone, showing that view that we XR developers know very well. HTC has a new CEO: Yves Maitre. HTC, one of the most important companies in the VR landscape, has now a new boss: Yves Maitre.
And since I’m here, of course I’m spending also some time to try some cool stuff before the exhibition starts on the 19 th (after that, I will be forced to stay at my booth). RealMax can mount a LeapMotion device, so you have the power of using naturally your hands to interact with AR elements. LeapMotion) on the same headset.
Bandai Namco’s ‘ Project i Can ‘ has made the Anywhere Door a (virtual) reality using the HTC Vive, LeapMotion, and a few simple props tracked with attached Vive controllers. As the tunnel nears, it becomes apparent that the users are on a collision course, though they can be saved by ducking.
This seems crazy to me: HTC has always been blamed for its high prices (well, $1400 for the Vive Pro was a bit too much…) but the Vive Focus Plus , that is an enterprise device, costs $799… $200 less than the Business Quest! Unless they will release Half Life 3 , of course. The Business Oculus Go, 64 GB edition, costs $599.
If you see the program of the conferences or workshops , you may see that there are very interesting people there, like some guys from Epic Games, other people by HTC Vive, Keiichi Matsuda from LeapMotion , Alex Coulombe and also the epic Enea Le Fons from #30DaysInVR.
Someone asked me if it is ripe yet, and of course, it is not, exactly as in the rest of the world. The epic Noah Zerkin (the guy making the LeapMotion North Star headsets) at our booth to try the game! If the answer is no, then WCVRI is not interesting for you, because it is an event very China-oriented.
Of course, you must also pre-install the game on all the devices; Batteries and chargers. These, of course, are to be bought in China and not to be taken from home. We asked for help to our technical partner HTC Vive, that provided us a girl, Starry, that did this as a part-time job to earn some money while she studied at University.
There it has presented a lot of news regarding all Facebook companies (Messenger, Instagram, Facebook, etc…) and of course, among these pieces of news, we had some AR and VR ones. Of course, the quality of the tracking is not the one of the Kinect yet, but we’re getting close. Other research projects.
This was what inspired me to create Graffiti 3D – a VR demo that I entered into the LeapMotion 3D Jam. Using the LeapMotion Controller’s image passthrough, you can create something from nothing, right there in your living room: An early creation from Patrik Jensen , before I started using the Hovercast menu system.
Reviewed On: HTC Vive (Vive Controllers) and Oculus Rift (Xbox Gamepad). You can of course get a large helping of all of this through the free demo, so it will be interesting to see how New Retro Arcade Neon continues to differentiate itself and build more value into their premium game through further updates.
The HTC Vive is arguably the best out there, but having to buy a souped-up laptop just to run it, paying full price for brief games that feel more like demos, and trailing a huge cable off your head and fumbling to mount trackers on your ceiling…it’s not ideal. That gives users more than enough space to walk, run, and even sprint while in VR.
Martin Schubert is a VR Developer/Designer at LeapMotion and the creator of Weightless and Geometric. From the crudest, touching the spoon snap attaches it to your hand/controller, to an extremely nuanced simulation of real-life grabbing as detailed in building the LeapMotion Interaction Engine.
Code is a big part of what makes XR work, of course. And we actually tried to tackle this problem with the help of major headset manufacturers – Oculus, HTC, LeapMotion, Intel — and they supported us to create VR/AR labs around the world. And we also see a lot of, of course, spinoffs from these corporates.

I mean, it sort of makes more sense to me that, as long as the prices for the headsets are lingering up pretty high — like the Cosmos from HTC, the brand new one, it’ll be an $800 purchase. Dean: And I think more critical are these more foundational companies, like Facebook and Valve and HTC. Dean: Yeah, I think.

Because if Apple is just going to repeat the same use cases of the HTC Vive and Meta Quest 2, but selling it at $3000, it is just going to fail spectacularly. Of course, this theory has its problems, too: TVs can be watched by many people together… but spending 12,000$ to make a family of 4 people watch TV together seems a bit too much.
Fallout 4 (2015), Bethesda’s beloved post-apocalyptic open world RPG, is now in VR, letting you stalk the Wasteland as the sole survivor of Vault 111 from the immersive point of view of the HTC Vive headset. Available On: HTC Vive ( Steam ). Reviewed On: HTC Vive, Tested on Rift (see note below).
Of course, there are some little issues, like for instance: There is a little latency for positional tracking and tracking of controllers (even if it is hardly noticeable); Sometimes you can spot some artifacts , especially if you move very fast; The images do not appear as crisp as on the Rift S , because of the compression stuff.
