Already a dominant application on the HTC Vive, PlayStation VR and Google Daydream platforms, Google’s immensely popular YouTube VR experience is now available on the Samsung Gear VR. Two days ago, I’ve been at HTC Vive Chinese headquarters in Beijing. It has been a really amazing day, where I have been able to try some amazing HTC tech demos (more on this later on! Of course, Valve has not confirmed anything of that, and will keep operating with its usual slow pace until it releases a polished product. The specifications on paper look nice, and for sure the one between Google and Samsung looks like a strong partnership.
When in 2015 I had my first Samsung Gear VR, I was amazed: finally, I could enjoy high-quality tether-less virtual reality. Today, thanks to the fellow VR community member Eloi Gerard , I’ve found an article on lowyat.net that confirms that Samsung is not that enthusiast about Gear VR and that has probably different future plans.

In the case of VR, we all remember the competition between HTC and Oculus in 2016, with HTC clearly winning the market until Oculus used Facebook’s money to slash the price of the Rift around 2017. To these, you have to add the companies that are already competing, like for instance HTC or HP. No one can compete now.
HTC has made its moves at MWC, too. HTC is one of the best companies when it comes to XR for enterprise and it’s good that it is expanding its offering in the field. Of course, the XR space has come a long way since then. We now have the Quest 3 and Quest 3S , not to mention countless impressive headsets from the likes of HTC VIVE, Pico, and Varjo. If Valve hopes to compete with Meta, Apple and Samsung, it must get creative. For now, we can only wait for more rumors to emerge.

Of course there might be hardware from new companies entering the market, but the hardware of the major players in the market will stay the same. The hardware will not change. In that way the next 12 months will be rather uninteresting for VR users that are just waiting for the next hardware generation.
Notice that while reading this review you must remind that this is just a devkit: its performances are of course not perfect, and its design and features may change before the final release.
