Meta appears to be readying a tool that will allow Quest users the ability to force software updates via a tethered connection. XR enthusiast and serial data miner Luna uncovered existence of the tool, which is said to allow users the ability to update Quest’s operating system over USB via the “Sideload Update” option in the recovery menu.

Maze Theory today announced that its upcoming immersive puzzle-adventure game Infinite Inside is set to arrive next month, coming to all major headsets. Meta announced a new developer accelerator aimed at kickstarting ‘Lifestyle’ apps for Quest which make use of mixed reality, AI and hand-tracking. It’s no secret that a lot of folks out there would probably love to have a pool table or other large social fixture in their living spaces. Realistically, most people simply don't have the floorspace, or budget, to make it happen. This is where mixed reality fills in the gaps. Digital objects and other people can be brought into our physical spaces, basically teleported in by headsets like the Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro.

This week, at AWE 2024, Sony Electronics introduced new 3D visualisation tools that enable users to see and interact with XR content without smart glasses via the ELF-SR2 (27-inch) and ELF-SR1 (15.6-inch) Spatial Reality Displays to enable professional RT3D workflows and considerations. Thanks to the new display technology, users can avoid invasive VR headsets, promoting longer XR content use periods without the perceived hardware hurdles.

Augmented World Expo in Long Beach is the first conference I’ve attended fully equipped with Meta Ray-Ban glasses and Apple Vision Pro as part of my reporting toolkit. I made plans to attend Augmented World Expo this year in Long Beach without a schedule in mind. Here, there are people I wanted to see and talk to in the physical world. I’ve taken many of those meetings off the record or on background with discussions informing my reporting long-term.

Western Digital expanded its WD Blue NVMe family of budget SSDs this week with the introduction of the the WD Blue SN5000 series, an updated lineup of SSDs that, among other things, adds a 4 TB model. Being budget drives, the SN5000 series is not going to be a performance monster, but their combination of capacity, reliability, and relatively low price could make them popular both among casual buyers and among enthusiasts looking for relatively cheap bulk solid-state storage.
