A flight simulator rig using a VR headset has been FAA qualified for the first time. The rig in question is Loft Dynamics' simulator for the Airbus Helicopters H125 (formerly known as Eurocopter AS350 Squirrel) helicopter. FAA qualification means US helicopter pilots can now use this simulator to train and receive credit toward official pilot ratings.

Capping off an extensive (and expensive) week for Intel, the company has also announced that they are taking additional steps to address the ongoing chip stability issues with desktop Raptor Lake chips – the 13 th and 14 th Generation desktop Core processors. In order to keep owners whole, Intel will be extending the warranty on retail boxed Raptor Lake chips by two years, bringing the cumulative warranty for the chips to five years altogether.

In an unexpected announcement during their quarterly earnings call this week, Western Digital revealed that it has begun sampling an upcoming 32TB hard drive. The nearline HDD is aimed at hyperscalers, and relies on a combination of Westen Digital's EAMR technology, as well as shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology to hit their highest capacity figures to date.

HTC cut the price of Vive XR Elite from $1100 to $900 in the US. Vive XR Elite is HTC's most recent standalone headset, launched early last year, and its first targeted to consumers instead of just businesses. XR Elite features the same kind of small early pancake lenses as 2021's Vive Flow, and uses the original generation Snapdragon XR2 chip also used in Quest 2.

Apple has released its quarterly earnings without indicating how the Vision Pro is selling. On an earnings call with investors, CEO Tim Cook said the headset now has 2,500 native apps and 1.5 million compatible apps (because of the wider App Store) but stopped short of offering any hard numbers. “Vision Pro users are customising their own workspaces, watching movies on 100-foot screens, and exploring entire worlds with just a pinch of their fingertips,” Cook said.
