When I was at AWE, one of the demos I was the most curious about was the one of Distance Technologies, the company that promises to offer glasses-free augmented reality. I was lucky enough to be one of the few who managed to try it in a private showcase in a hotel room close to the convention center, and I’m happy to tell about my experience to all of you who could not be there.

Quest 3 is on sale for the first time since its launch. It’s a decent discount that’s even cheaper than buying an officially refurbished headset from Meta. Quest 3 is on sale on Amazon US right now for $430. That’s a savings of $70 (14%) off the MSRP. Surprisingly, it’s even cheaper than buying the headset officially refurbished by Meta , which is still priced at $450.

At its Galaxy Unpacked event this week Samsung appeared to give a timeline for its upcoming Android XR headset. During the event Samsung's President and Head of the Mobile Experience Business TM Roh said on stage that "a new XR platform is coming later this year", and Google's senior vice president of Platforms and Devices Rick Osterloh confirmed Google is still involved.

This week, following a series of moves towards building an open developer framework for its Quest headset portfolio, Meta announced “ Ocean ,” a new open-source, cross-platform framework for creating computer vision and mixed/augmented reality applications. Post by @metaopensource View on Threads Notably, Meta is launching Ocean as an interoperable framework which supports applications across various OS-end devices such as iOS, Android, Quest, macOS, Windows, and Linux.

Breachers and Racket Club are free to try for one hour each this weekend on Quest headsets. The new program from Meta spotlights high quality multiplayer VR games from its store each weekend through Aug. 12. Starting Friday afternoon, July 12, at 3 pm local time, Breachers and Racket Club will be accessible for an hour each. While that should be enough time to learn controls and meet up with a friend, for many multiplayer VR games an hour is going to be a pretty tight window.

Running VRChat inside VRChat is possible in Quest standalone headsets. The Android beta of VRChat can run as a 2D app installable via sideloading. This has been technically possible for some time, but as Meta improves multitasking capabilities for Horizon OS it is getting easier to check in on VRChat or another flat-screen Android app while waiting for something to happen in a completely different immersive world.
