Researchers from Meta Reality Labs, Princeton University, and others have published a new paper detailing a method for achieving ultra-wide field-of-view holographic displays with retina resolution. The method drastically reduces the display resolution that would otherwise be necessary to reach such parameters, making it a potential shortcut to bringing holographic displays to XR headsets.

Meta is finally rolling out the long-awaited travel mode for Quest 2 and Quest 3, ostensibly hacking away another unique feature from Apple Vision Pro. Update (May 13th, 2024) : Meta says the new Quest 2/3 Travel Mode was specially tuned to account for the motion of an airplane, even when it comes to looking out the window. The company says in a blog post it will be updating Travel Mode in the future to work with other modes of transportation, such as trains.

Quest 2 and Quest 3 now have an "experimental" Travel Mode for use on airplanes. You can add Travel Mode to your headset's Quick settings via the toggle in the Experimental section of settings. Meta says you need to be on stable (not PTC) system software v65 to see this and should restart your headset if you still don't. Note that Quest Pro isn't supported, only Quest 2 and Quest 3.

Lufthansa and Meta announced they will provide a Quest 3 headset to business class passengers on some flights starting in summer. Described as a "pilot program (pun intended)", the scheme will see customers on "selected flights" in Lufthansa's new "Allegris" Business Class this summer offered a Quest 3 headset with a streamlined launcher preloaded with certain apps.

Ultraleap released Hyperion, the latest version of its industry-leading hand tracking software runtime and SDK. Hyperion supports the Leap Motion Controller 2 addon, which supports almost any headset (including standalone headsets) via USB or can be integrated into a headset's existing sensor suite by headset makers. We tried the previous version of Ultraleap's hand tracking, called Gemini, at CES 2022 and found it noticeably superior to Meta Quest or Apple Vision Pro hand tracking.
