The XR landscape has changed significantly over the last five years with the flourishing of standalone headsets and new entrants like Apple and (soon) Google. Despite all of that, the PC VR platform has continued a slow but steady growth. So much has happened in VR in last five years that if you had told me back in early 2020, I’m not sure I would have believed you.
This has been a very intense week for me, work-wise. Luckily, intense in a good way. And just when I thought I had already too many things to do, I had to add another task, because Meta decided to release camera access for Quest and I couldnt resist getting my hands dirty with it! Anyway, lets dig into the most interesting pieces of XR news of the week which are actually a lot!
Meta has finally released the long-awaited Passthrough Camera API for Quest, which gives developers direct access to the headset’s passthrough RGB cameras for better scene understandingkickstarting the next generation of more immersive mixed reality experiences on Quest. Until now, Quest’s passthrough cameras were mostly locked down, limiting what developers could do beyond Metas built-in functionalities.

Spunge Games, the studio behind VR action-shooter Dead Second (2022), announced a mixed reality pet simulator called Eggy, letting you take care of your very own pet dragon. Coming to Quest 3/S on April 17th, Eggy opens a rift in your house, putting you between the Dragon Realm and your boring old dragon-less living room. In Eggy , a glowing egg and an ancient Book of Lore appearsessentially a manual on how to train your dragon (no relation).
From next week, Varjo XR-4 headsets will require a $2500/year subscription for certain advanced mixed reality features. Who Are Varjo? What Is XR-4? Varjo is a Finland-based startup that sells ultra-high-end tethered PC VR headsets with very high central angular resolution, mainly intended for enterprise and government users. The Varjo XR-4 series is the company's latest offering, launched at the very end of 2023.
