Microsoft revealed last year it had plans to pull the plug on support for its entire WMR platform on Windows. Now, with the launch of Windows 11 2024 Update yesterday, those VR headsets have essentially been bricked. Initially kicked off in 2017, Microsoft was well positioned to make Windows a home to a fleet of PC VR headsets , which were notably some of the first headsets with inside-out tracking, including entrants from Acer, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, HP, and Samsung.

The creators behind some of VR's most impactful experiences for first timers are looking for Quest 3 owners to open their homes to a new virtual pet. Bernie Yee and some of his teammates at Windup Minds worked on a collection of experiences from Oculus, including Bogo and First Steps, that served as memorable introductions to VR across multiple headset generations.

Meta has aggressively expanded its VR game portfolio with the acquisition of nine VR studios since 2019. We take a look what’s come of these deals over the last five years. Acquisition by Meta usually means a few things. PlayStation VR2 is now the ninth most used VR headset on SteamVR. This data comes from the Steam Hardware & Software Survey , which is offered to a random sample of Steam’s user base each month. Samsung is working on a Ray-Ban Meta glasses competitor with Google Gemini AI, The Information reports. The project was greenlit earlier this year, The Information's Sylvia Varnham O'Regan writes, after intense debates inside Google around whether to convince Samsung to build full AR glasses or simpler smart glasses like Ray-Ban Meta glasses, with Google and Samsung executives landing on the latter.

According to a recent Reuters report , Snap is getting closer to securing a trademark registration for the term “Spectacles,” the name of the firm’s upcoming AR smart glasses, bringing the device slightly closer to consumers’ hands following a period of downtime. The news comes after Snap struggled to secure the Spectacles trademark because it is a generic term, according to the USPTO, which also originally denied the trademark in 2020.

The VR modding and classic gaming communities achieved a major milestone this week as Team Beef officially released Beef Raider XR. This pioneering mod takes the 1996 classic Tomb Raider and catapults it into the realm of modern VR, as well as Mixed Reality, with players stepping into the boots of Lara Croft or commanding her across their living rooms in third-person.

As spotted by BusinessLive , the Ministry of Defence (MoD) procurement branch, Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), is undergoing a three-month smart glasses trial to leverage AR hardware to help support government employees with hearing difficulties by displaying peer-to-peer conversations as real-time immersive text visualisations for users to read.

The Meta Avatars graphics overhaul is now live in Horizon Worlds, Home, and Workrooms, and the SDK for third-party apps has been updated too. The overhaul was first announced with a pre-rendered mockup by Mark Zuckerberg at Meta Connect 2022 two years ago. All Meta users are now offered to upgrade their avatar when navigating to edit it in the Meta Horizon phone app, or in Horizon OS on a Quest headset.

Meta Platforms is planning to manufacture its Quest mixed reality headsets in Vietnam from 2025. That is according to an announcement made in Hanoi by Meta’s President for Global Affairs, Nick Clegg , a week after his meeting with Vietnam’s President To Lam in New York. Reuters reported on the event and shared the Facebook owner’s intentions to up its investment in Vietnam’s AI innovation in order to grow its footprint there.
