A SXSW to remember with who’s-who in XR creative technology showing face at the fest for the first time in two years. SXSW was back in full force last week. Masked or otherwise (Texas is pretty lax), a frenzy of wild-eyed art, music, film, and XR-hungry visitors flooded into Austin for a week of back-to-back programming. From discussions around virtual land ownership to cloth made from washable circuit boards to NFT galleries and off-site multi-player audio adventures, SXSW delighted and demande
People are expectant of Magic Leap’s soon-to-be-released enterprise AR glasses. Dubbed Magic Leap 2, it’s expected to be better than its 2018 predecessor , which flopped. Magic Leap’s announcement came just in time as interest in the metaverse soars. Everyone’s asking—will Magic Leap 2 lead the way for widespread metaverse adoption? ?. While Magic Leap may have dazzled consumers with its AR headset that launched almost four years ago, this is not its goal this time around.
Though the metaverse is more often discussed in a VR context, AR could help unlock a more rich and meaningful real-world metaverse. What are the underlying technologies required to make it happen? This post appeared first on AR Insider.

To avoid awkward and sometimes disastrous learning content, instructional designers must use authentic translation in the right context to get optimal results. For example, even a simple phrase like “got milk” translates to “are you lactating” in Mexico. Can you imagine what a straight translation might do to your course? With over 317 million people in the US and over 6.7 billion potential customers in the world, personalizing training seems logical.
At GDC 2022 this week, VR glove creator Manus revealed its new Quantum Metagloves which the company says delivers significantly more accurate finger tracking than its prior solutions. Though priced for enterprise use, the company says it one day hopes to deliver the tech to consumers. Manus has been building motion gloves for use in real-time VR and motion capture for years now, with prior offerings being based on IMU and flex-sensor tracking.
As we’ve covered in our Space Race series (and corresponding AWE presentation ), one of AR’s opportunities is to augment the world in geographically-specific ways. Place-based relevance is a key value driver in everything from search to social media. The same will apply to AR. In fact, this principle may apply even more to AR than other technologies, given that its inherent promise is to digitally enhance the physical world.

On the occasion of the upcoming GTC, I had the opportunity of speaking with two very important people that work every day at innovating XR at NVIDIA: David Weinstein , Director of Virtual and Augmented Reality, and Gregory Jones , Director of Global Business Development/Product Management. I had an interesting chat with them about NVIDIA’s vision for the future, they also clarified to me what NVIDIA Omniverse is, and when 5G cloud streaming can become reality.
Are holograms the future of board games? AR tabletop gaming platform Tilt Five this week announced a new partnership with Asmodee Digital, a subsidiary of legendary French board game publisher Asmodee Group, to develop a series of holographic tabletop games brought to life using AR (augmented reality) technology. In the official announcement Tilt Five confirmed they’re working to reimagine select titles for the AR tabletop format.
Right now, there is widespread skepticism about the real value of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Indeed, while most NFTs are 2D images, it can be difficult to see why some hold them as so promising. However, many people in the emerging technology space believe that NFTs will really shine in spaces like AR/VR, and the metaverse. These blockchain-based virtual assets have already found a home in some VR environments, including Spatial and Ready Player Me.
AR continues to hold considerable potential for value creation. But it's not a monolithic technology. it's as varied as it is promising. We break down just five of the many AR modalities that are developing and gaining traction today. This post appeared first on AR Insider.

Snap announced it’s acquired neurotech startup NextMind, a Paris-based company known for creating a $400 pint-sized brain-computer interface (BCI). In a blog post , Snap says NextMind will help drive “long-term augmented reality research efforts within Snap Lab,” the company’s hardware team that’s currently building AR devices. “Snap Lab’s programs explore possibilities for the future of the Snap Camera, including Spectacles.
As we roll into 2022, it’s time for our annual ritual of synthesizing the lessons from recent history and formulating the outlook for the near term. The past year has been action-packed for spatial computing as the world gradually emerges from the grips of a pandemic. The past year was also marked by the emergence of metaverse mania. Though it has legitimate principles and promise, the term has been ambiguated through overuse.
When I talk about virtual reality or the metaverse, there are always people that ask me about its intrinsic risks of escapism and addiction: “Is it possible that people will prefer to live in a virtual world instead of the real one?” is a very common question I hear. It’s an intriguing theme about which I have heard different opinions and answers, and I’m always eager to know more because I want to have a complete picture of the situation.
The highly-anticipated sequel to Polyarc’s charming VR platformer arrives on PSVR this month. It’s hard to talk about the best VR platforming games without mentioning Moss. Originally released on PlayStation VR before heading to PC VR and Meta Quest headsets, the expertly-crafted third-person platformer had players teaming up with the tiny but mighty Quill as they embarked on a magical adventure through a mystical forest filled with mystery and danger.

With 191 country signatories to the Paris Climate Agreement now hard at work in the race to zero carbon by 2050, much of the heavy lifting in ecosystem sustainability falls on the shoulders of the world's densely populated urban centers. This conversation considers how today's AI-enabled simulation media, such as AR/VR, can be effectively applied to accelerate learning, understanding, training, and solutions-modeling to sustainability planning and design.
A lot of people don’t understand the difference between 360-degree video and virtual reality – and in some cases, the difference can be pretty subtle. It would be handy if hardware provided a line in the sand, but this isn’t the case – both kinds of experiences can be viewed in either VR headsets or flat displays. As similar as these experiences can seem, there are some differences between the experiences that are worth understanding.
During a briefing with Snap execs in the heights of Beverly Hills, we got a rare hands-on demo of the elusive developer-only AR-enabled Spectacles. We unpack the UX, positioning, and market potential. This post appeared first on AR Insider.

But trying to create stimulating content with the same tools you’ve always had is hard, right? Thankfully, wrong! Terrific tools in PowerPoint along with visual assets help you create the kind of dynamic content you need to capture your remote audience’s attention, with functions that allow for interactive sequences and navigation.
Ten days ago, I revealed to you that I was going to Austin, Texas to attend the SXSW, one of the most important events about creativity and technology in the USA. Since when has learning and development (L&D) become such a negative experience with its intended learners? Could it be because learners have been conditioned by very poor learning experiences over the past two decades, combined with the kinks of technological innovation? Or is it because learning has typically been designed as a one-size-fits-all solution, despite the fact that humans are not clones?
A new photo of Magic Leap 2 appears to show the device’s controller equipped with cameras for inside-out tracking which would be the first time we’ve seen the approach employed in a commercial XR headset. Though we learned plenty of interesting details about the forthcoming Magic Leap 2 AR headset back in January , it looks like there’s still some secrets left to uncover.
In my visit to SXSW, I could not miss the fireside chat with Mark Zuckerberg that took place two days ago. I have never seen Zuckerberg in real life, and even if he was in streaming, it was anyway intriguing that he was speaking live and also answering live to the questions of the audience, so it was a bit like having him in the room with us. I’m not a big fan of Zuck, honestly speaking, but he’s still the CEO of the most important XR company in the world, so it’s worth listeni
