Meta Connect keynote has just finished: for 90 minutes, Mark Zuckerberg and Andrew Bosworth guided us in discovering the upcoming products and partnerships that Meta is developing on its road to the Metaverse. Like every year, in a few days I will write a super big roundup of the event with EVERYTHING announced (you can subscribe to my newsletter not to miss it), but for now, let me just point out what are for me the main takeaways from the keynote.
Unreal Engine 5 brings two key features which stand to radically improve the realism of both 3D geometry and lighting. While the features aren’t yet fully optimized for VR, early developer experiments are showing impressive results. Unreal Engine 5 launched earlier this year, but unfortunately its two new key features—Lumen for global illumination lighting and Nanite for micro-geometry—weren’t supported for VR out of the gate.
By now, you’ve likely had your first VR experience. At least 171 million people globally have used VR. Whether through a video game console, mobile phone, or standalone headset, it is incredibly easy to access thousands of unique, mind-blowing experiences. If you’re close to someone or on the same network, you can meet and interact through your headsets.
