VR 101: Everything You Need to Know About the Samsung Gear VR If you’re reading this right now, you’re likely one of two people: you just got a brand new Samsung Galaxy S7 and a Samsung Gear VR headset came with it, so you went to Google to figure out what the heck the thing is and what you can do with it, or you just got a Gear VR some other way and you found this because you’re curious about where to start.
Virtual reality with a side of fries: McDonald's Sweden is releasing Happy Meal boxes that transform into VR headsets. The post McDonald's Is Transforming Happy Meal Boxes Into VR Headsets appeared first on WIRED.
The Oculus Rift is finally shipping to customers in more than 20 countries, and we're getting a good idea of how the device holds up from the initial reviews. You'll see some common threads throughout: along with an impressive virtual reality experience, the device is very comfortable with a solid design. But it's not all rainbows and butterflies here, so let's take a look at some of the downsides of this very niche and expensive product.
For VR to be the best it can be, for it to be life-changing, there are a few key ingredients that need to be mixed just right. If done correctly, a developer can deliver what his colloquially termed, presence. That is, the ability to take you somewhere other than where you really are, and trick your mind into believing it. These ingredients include, but may not be limited to, high framerate, high screen refresh rate, high resolution, high pixel fill density, low persistence, and field of view (F

To avoid awkward and sometimes disastrous learning content, instructional designers must use authentic translation in the right context to get optimal results. For example, even a simple phrase like “got milk” translates to “are you lactating” in Mexico. Can you imagine what a straight translation might do to your course? With over 317 million people in the US and over 6.7 billion potential customers in the world, personalizing training seems logical.
Bringing hands into virtual reality just got a major upgrade. Now officially integrated in Unreal Engine 4.11 , getnamo’s independent plugin for Leap Motion makes it faster and easier than ever to integrate Leap Motion Orion into your VR projects! This popular community plugin is now the official plugin and brings new features like rigged character hands, Image Hands, passthrough, and built-in support for the Oculus Rift.
I’ve been involved in some arguments about the inner workings of the Oculus Rift’s and HTC/Valve Vive’s tracking systems recently, and while I don’t want to get into any of that right now, I just did a little experiment. The tracking update rate of the Oculus Rift DK2, meaning the rate at which Oculus’ tracking driver sends different position/orientation estimates to VR applications, is 1000 Hz.

No one can hear you suck O2 canisters in space. Remember that scene in Gravity when Sandra Bullock is somehow managing to survive as the International Space Station is destroyed around her, sending millions of lethal fragments and shards her way? That’s basically the opening to ADR1FT, but now you’re the character struggling to survive, and somehow the experience is more vivid, real and immersive that any Hollywood film could hope to achieve.
VR is here! Better VR is coming soon! Here's a guide to all the platforms and headsets available now and right around the corner. The post Everything You Need to Know Before Buying a VR Headset appeared first on WIRED.
Since its purchase by Microsoft in 2014, Minecraft has regularly been pushed to new platforms such as Windows 10, Wii U, and Fire TV. In that spirit, Microsoft-owned Mojang has been developing virtual- and augmented-reality versions of the blocky sandbox game. Recently, Oculus, whose technology powers the Samsung Gear VR, demoed a modified Minecraft Pocket Edition for the Gear VR at GDC 2016.
This is the first in a series of articles about the role of vision and optics in VR. Today you learn how lenses for virtual reality headsets work but you first have to understand how our eyes work. Our eyes have built-in lenses that sit behind the pupils, the black part of our eyes. On the back of our eyes we have receptors that translate the incoming light into useful information and enable us to see.
With a rapidly changing economy, Avangrid Renewables looked to virtual reality to develop a standardized form of immersive training in order to onboard and upskill technicians faster than ever before.

At GDC - the Game Developers Conference - I saw quite a lot of HTC Vive demos. Compare these two images: See any similarities? Just like the bridesmaid carries the bride's train, the "VR bridesmaid" carries the wire for the VR user. Low-latency wireless video links have been on the market for years. I hope to see some in consumer VR very soon, so that the "VR bridesmaid" can be a thing of the past.
Virtual Reality is defined as “an artificial environment which is experienced through sensory stimuli (as sights and sounds) provided by a computer and in which one’s actions partially determine what happens in the environment” according to the Merriam Webster dictionary. Yet it can seem so realistic that it could pose a danger to one’s safety.
Leap Motion’s new Orion software represents a radical shift in our controller’s ability to see your hands. In tandem, we’ve also been giving our Unity toolset an overhaul from the ground up. The Core Asset Orion documentation has details on using the tools and the underlying API, but to help you get acquainted, here’s some background and higher-level context for how the package works and where it’s headed.

With 191 country signatories to the Paris Climate Agreement now hard at work in the race to zero carbon by 2050, much of the heavy lifting in ecosystem sustainability falls on the shoulders of the world's densely populated urban centers. This conversation considers how today's AI-enabled simulation media, such as AR/VR, can be effectively applied to accelerate learning, understanding, training, and solutions-modeling to sustainability planning and design.
Six Flags is teaming up with Samsung to make riding a roller coaster a little more thrilling, and quite possibly a little more nauseating as well. Six Flags is adding a virtual experience to nine roller coasters, which riders can experience via a Samsung Gear VR. It seems similar in concept to the simulator rides you find at Universal Studios (like the Simpsons or Transformers rides), except now the movement is all real, and not just a hydraulic pod mimicking movements that you see on a screen.
For anyone with a DK2 waiting patiently for their CV1 headset to arrive, the wait has suddenly become easier. That’s because the Oculus Rift DK2 works perfectly with both the Oculus Store and this week’s launch games. Sure, the resolution on the DK2 isn’t quite as high as the CV1, but you’ll still have a blast playing Lucky’s Tale, Henry, EVEL Valarie, Esper 2, ADR1FT and more – without any issues, problems or performance issues.
Welcome back to Everything VR & AR! On this episode, Nathan and Kevin are joined by Robert "The Scobleizer" Scoble as he shares his thoughts on the current state of VR & AR technology, along with what he feels it will take in order for devices such as the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR and more to be successful. Robert Scoble has been covering technology for a number of years and recently left a position at RackSpace to cover VR & AR at UploadVR.com.

Remote meetings are here to stay - and many are BORING. If you are trying to engage your learners (or any audience), compelling content is critical. But trying to create stimulating content with the same tools you’ve always had is hard, right? Thankfully, wrong! Terrific tools in PowerPoint along with visual assets help you create the kind of dynamic content you need to capture your remote audience’s attention, with functions that allow for interactive sequences and navigation.
1994 marks the peak of what many view as the first “Big Bubble” in VR popularity. There were literally hundreds of (mostly) entrepreneurial startups taking a wild fling and what seemed to be a game-changing technology. You could strike sparks anywhere! By 1997 most had either vanished or transformed themselves. If you stood in just the right place, with the right kind of eyes, you could almost see the high water mark — that place where the wave finally broke, and rolled back. ( Thank
With the recent release of the Oculus Rift CV1 and 1.3 SDK, this is an exciting time for virtual reality. Here’s what you need to know to start playing and building with the consumer edition. How can I build in Unity with the 1.3 SDK? Upgrading to a new SDK can be time-consuming and complicated. But not today! Since when has learning and development (L&D) become such a negative experience with its intended learners? Could it be because learners have been conditioned by very poor learning experiences over the past two decades, combined with the kinks of technological innovation? Or is it because learning has typically been designed as a one-size-fits-all solution, despite the fact that humans are not clones?

So the Oculus Rift is finally out, and there are loads of new games to play! We’re slowly working our way through them, and hope to bring you reviews galore over the coming days, but in the meantime here’s the first video footage that we’ve managed to capture; the first 10 minutes of ADR1FT on the Oculus Rift: Be warned, there are minor spoilers in the video.
You can do a lot of things with Blocks : smack them around, turn off gravity, select different modes and shapes. But at its heart, our flagship demo for Orion contains two fundamental interactions – creating blocks and grabbing blocks. These are built on pinching and grabbing, which are based on how we naturally use our hands in the real world. This week we’re excited to share Pinch Utilities , a new module for our Unity Core Assets that gives you access to the power of pinch.
