These days I’m experimenting with the development of mixed reality applications , and on Quest I’ve so been playing around with environment understanding, seeing the good and the bad of Meta’s approach on this topic. In this article, I will explain to you where we are at, and what we have to change to make mixed reality truly useful.
Varjo announced it’s now supporting Quest 3 and Quest Pro for its cloud XR streaming platform ‘Reality Cloud’, which lets professionals stream and share immersive 3D content rendered on cloud-based GPUs. The Finland-based creator of high-end XR headsets is known for its pricey, but high-quality mixed reality headsets, which are primarily used in the enterprise space for designers and engineers, but also for things such as detailed simulation and training.
As of April 8 2024, the company operating virtual reality immersive collaboration platform provider Glue declared bankruptcy under a decision by the District Court of Helsinki. The operating firm is selling assets, including the Glue platform. Unless a new company purchases the platform and continues its operation, Glue may shut down for good – “despite our best efforts to prevent this outcome, we were unable to find a timely solution,” the firm noted.

Meta announced it’s bringing an ‘Instant Replay’ feature to Horizon Worlds, which will let world creators and visitors capture their antics without having to hit ‘record’ on their cameras. The feature, which is currently in early access on Horizon Worlds v157 , can be enabled by individual world creators, letting anyone in that specific social VR room automatically capture video and share via the media gallery.
The Meta Quest v64 system software update is starting to roll out. Version 64 is focused almost entirely on Quest 3, bringing improved passthrough quality, external mic support, and lying down mode. The update also makes casting continue when you take the headset off. As always, keep in mind that Quest system software updates "roll out" gradually, so it may take a few days or even more than a week for your headset to get the Quest v64 update.

The Steam Hardware & Software Survey reports the percentage of Steam users that use a VR headset on SteamVR each month. In March this figure was 1.82%, down from 1.97% in February. Meta announced it’s now rolling out its v64 software update for Quest, which the company says features key improvements to passthrough quality on Quest 3, support for external mics, and a few other bits and bobs.
