You may know that this is my third week in China and I’ve toured a few cities to enjoy good food and the company of some friends, but also to meet some companies and some professionals working in XR. Communication between China and the West is not always easy, so the best way to know how things are going here is to speak with people who experience the daily reality of the Chinese XR ecosystem.

HTC today revealed its next standalone XR headset, the Vive Focus Vision. The company appears to be appealing again to enterprise and prosumers, packing in a mishmash of specs from Vive Focus 3 and Vive Elite XR—priced at $1,000. HTC launched pre-orders today for its new MR headset, Vive Focus Vision. Pre-orders are available from today through October 17th, after which the headset will presumably launch.

Recently, immersive learning service provider Avantis Education won an Educators Pick Best of STEM 2024 Award, which showcased the firm’s success in rolling out its XR tool to K-12 schools in the United States. Avantis Education specifically won the Trailblazer: Immersive Reality (AR/VR) category based on the success of ClassVR. This educational package includes XR hardware and software to enable a successful immersive deployment and utilisation in STEM learning courses.

To avoid awkward and sometimes disastrous learning content, instructional designers must use authentic translation in the right context to get optimal results. For example, even a simple phrase like “got milk” translates to “are you lactating” in Mexico. Can you imagine what a straight translation might do to your course? Meta is widely expected to reveal the Quest 3S headset next week during the Meta Connect event. The company aims to introduce a new headset with mixed reality capabilities similar to Quest 3, but at a cheaper price. An apparent leak suggests the headset could be its most affordable yet. According to Reddit user Vast_Front259 , an Amazon ad seen on the Peacock streaming service shows the Quest 3S with 128GB of storage priced at just $300.

Meta and eyewear conglomerate EssilorLuxottica announced they’re expanding their smartglasses partnership into 2030, which promises to see further development of “multi-generational smart eyewear products” from the companies. Working together since 2019, Meta and EssilorLuxottica released the first-gen Facebook Ray-Ban Stories glasses back in 2021, later launching the follow-up Ray-Ban Meta Glasses in fall 2023, which included improved cameras, audio and more design options.

The clearest Quest 3S photos yet have leaked. They confirm it lacks a headphone jack and reveal its battery size. The nine images were shared to the Virtual Reality Channel of Arca, a South Korean forum site somewhat similar to Reddit. It's unclear where they originate from, but the background setting resembles what we've seen before in regulatory testing labs.
