Every year I like to write a detailed report about all the major news from Oculus/Facebook/Meta Connect. This year I want to do something a bit different: instead of reporting a list of all the announcements from there, I want to give you a detailed commentary about the event from a technical strategy standpoint. This is part of what I do for a living: in companies, I’m not only the developer or lead of developers, but I also work on technical roadmaps for products.
HTC announced that its Vive Ultimate Tracker is now compatible with third-party PC VR headsets that support SteamVR. Originally developed for the Vive Focus 3 and Vive XR Elite, Vive Ultimate Tracker is a puck-like device that comes equipped with two cameras, allowing it to track its position without external devices or base stations, supporting both object and full-body tracking.
The VirtuWalk VR treadmill, navigation handlebar, and headset is now available for purchase. According to VirtuWalk’s website, its VR technology centres around its treadmill that allows users to experience the feeling of walking within a virtual world, with a patented handlebar for navigating around corners, and a VR headset to view the simulations.

Microsoft has removed Windows Mixed Reality from Windows 11. With Windows 11 24H2, the latest major version of Microsoft's PC operating system, you can no longer use a Windows MR headset in any way - not even on Steam.
