Last December, Google unceremoniously killed off Google Glass Explorer Edition with a final software update, leaving the Glass Enterprise Edition 2 as the only remaining AR wearable from Google. Perhaps no project to date shows the potential of Quill— Oculus’ VR illustration and animation tool — quite like The Remedy. This past December, Oculus introduced native hand-tracking functionality for the Oculus Quest, offering users the chance to navigate the Oculus Home interface with their bare hands as opposed to the Touch controllers. You can now switch to hand-tracking by simply putting down your Touch controllers. The Oculus Quest just keeps getting better. Yesterday Oculus announced the rollout of their 13.0 software update, revealing a sprinkling of new features and enhancements heading to the standalone VR headset this week. The most noteworthy of which, a new hand-tracking option that — when enabled, allows you to automatically switch between your Oculus Touch controllers and hand-tracking mode.
From very early on, the SteamVR dashboard had adapted Steam’s ‘Big Picture’ mode which was designed for use on big screen TV’s rather than in VR. As it wasn’t made with VR in mind, much of its functionality is clunky and some of it borderline broken. Now, SteamVR is getting a dashboard overhaul which is ditching Big Picture.
Right now, AR experiences are rather like paint. They can be applied to our physical reality to inform or entertain. Some days ago, I’ve seen a very intriguing video on Twitter by Robert Scoble about him trying an app that was able to understand what objects were in his surroundings in real-time. I was pretty intrigued, and I asked him what was this app, and he answered me that it was Chooch.ai. Chooch.ai is an AI SDK for Android and iOS, that thanks to some machine learning magic, is able to see your surroundings and understand what there is around you in real-time.
