Emerging technologies could add a whole new level of immersion to VR. If you’re reading this right now, chances are, you’re not really familiar with the topic of neuroevolution. Or deep learning. Or natural language processing. Frankly, this is normal– these are all smaller subsets of artificial intelligence (AI), and it’s still a new, competitive, and developing field.
Facebook announced today plans to acquire CTRL-Labs, a brain-computer interface startup developing hardware and software for decoding electrical activity from the brain to be used for computer input. Facebook says that with the company’s expertise, it plans to develop a wrist-worn neural input device. Facebook’s VP of AR and VR, Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, announced the planned acquisition of CTRL-Labs via his Facebook page today.

Navigating your way around an unfamiliar indoor area can be disorienting. Perhaps even a bit more challenging than exploring a new city. After all, there’s a wealth of navigation systems for outdoor spaces. Meanwhile, not all establishments have indoor navigation systems. That’s because GPS doesn’t work as well indoors. Plus, indoor spaces are far more complex.

To avoid awkward and sometimes disastrous learning content, instructional designers must use authentic translation in the right context to get optimal results. For example, even a simple phrase like “got milk” translates to “are you lactating” in Mexico. Can you imagine what a straight translation might do to your course? With over 317 million people in the US and over 6.7 billion potential customers in the world, personalizing training seems logical.
The Oculus Quest app will allow users to turn any game into a calorie-tracked fitness experience. The first time I worked up a sweat in VR, it was entirely accidental. I was playing a fantasy hack-and-slash, and the core battle mechanic required players to duck oncoming sword swings every few seconds. I played for about thirty to forty minutes, and to my surprise, I almost fell over when I took off the headset.
On stage at Oculus Connect today, Facebook Reality Labs Chief Scientist Michael Abrash revealed two new prototype VR headsets from the company, Half Dome 2 and Half Dome 3. Both headsets offer improvements over the original Half Dome prototype showed off last year. Last year Facebook showed off Half Dome, a prototype VR headset which offered up a much larger field of view than current Rift or Quest headsets, as well as varifocal displays which allows the headset to display a more comfortable and

Today Tilt Five is launching its Kickstarter campaign for its innovative augmented reality glasses for tabletop gaming. For this occasion, I have recorded an incredible interview with Tilt Five CEO Jeri Ellsworth , where she doesn’t only talk about Tilt Five, but about a lot, really a lot of interesting stuff. Jeri has been in the R&D of Valve Software when Abrash was still there, so she knows a lot about AR and VR.
Sometimes, to win, you have to play the long game. XR technology is an exciting field but it isn’t ubiquitous yet. Unfortunately, ubiquity is where investors want something to be before they put money in it. The Glimpse Group has a unique business model that allows them to warm investors to the idea of supporting XR technology. The Glimpse Group CEO, Lyron Bentovim, told ARPost all about his multi-year game plan.
Create a custom avatar for social events and work meetings. The process is simple, you take a quick selfie on your phone and the app then analyzes your photo and creates a 3D representation of your likeness. You then take a few minutes to polish up your VR avatar to look even more like you by tweaking the shape of your face, the shape of your nose, choosing an outfit that reflects your personality, and adding accessories.

With a rapidly changing economy, Avangrid Renewables looked to virtual reality to develop a standardized form of immersive training in order to onboard and upskill technicians faster than ever before.
The opening keynote of the Oculus Connect 6 has just finished and there have been tons of interesting announcements there. I will leave the description of all the news presented at OC6 for a big roundup article that I’ll write during the weekend (as I do every year). Today I want to focus only about the most important announcements, that de facto define the road that Facebook will pursue in the short term future.
Tech giants’ motivations in AR often trace back to their core businesses. This is simply to future proof massive sums of revenue. And due to these companies’ gravitational pull, they can move large chunks of the market along with them. So predicting AR’s trajectory becomes an exercise in “ following the money.” For Google, investments in AR are to drive search (visual search, mapping).
Zuckerburg reveals hand and finger tracking without the need for additional hardware. Facebook’s Oculus Connect 6 kicked off this morning with a slew of big reveals for the Oculus Quest standalone headset, one of the biggest being the reveal of hand and finger tracking. With 191 country signatories to the Paris Climate Agreement now hard at work in the race to zero carbon by 2050, much of the heavy lifting in ecosystem sustainability falls on the shoulders of the world's densely populated urban centers. This conversation considers how today's AI-enabled simulation media, such as AR/VR, can be effectively applied to accelerate learning, understanding, training, and solutions-modeling to sustainability planning and design.
Another week, another roundup of amazing AR/VR news! This week I have been pretty busy working on our mixed reality fitness game that is very close to launch and in preparing some amazing articles for next week (I will publish a review of the Valve Index and a super-amazing interview to Jeri Ellsworth, the creator of TiltFive augmented reality glasses!
This post is adapted from ARtillery Intelligence’s latest report, Hearables: Broadening the Definition of AR. It includes some of its data and takeaways. More can be previewed here and subscribe for the full report. Augmented Reality’s definition continues to evolve. Though considered by most to be graphics that overlay the physical world, there’s growing sentiment that AR’s definition is too narrow.
Native hand tracking, PC/standalone hybrid functionality, and new games confirmed for the Oculus platform. That’s a wrap on Oculus Connect 6. Facebook’s annual two-day developer conference dedicated to all things Oculus brought its A-game this year delighting users with a series of surprise bombshells, as well as updates on several highly-anticipated updates and experiences.

Remote meetings are here to stay - and many are BORING. If you are trying to engage your learners (or any audience), compelling content is critical. But trying to create stimulating content with the same tools you’ve always had is hard, right? Thankfully, wrong! Terrific tools in PowerPoint along with visual assets help you create the kind of dynamic content you need to capture your remote audience’s attention, with functions that allow for interactive sequences and navigation.
Most people get pretty excited about augmented reality. It helps us to do our jobs, play games, and organize and access information in new ways. It also draws a lot of attention. That’s why one global organization is using AR technology to draw attention to its most recent campaign. Malaria No More. Malaria is a mosquito-borne deadly, though preventable and treatable, disease.
There have been enough music artists releasing Snapchat AR experiences over the past week to fill a small festival. Count them with me: Bruno Mars. Gucci Mane. Kodak Black. Missy Elliot. Imagine Dragons. Panic! At the Disco. The barrage of AR camera effects come courtesy of Lens Studio, which is also making the extra effort to draw attention to these Lenses via its Twitter account.
Facebook’s attempt at a VR metaverse is all about building your own experience. It appears as though the rumors regarding a new VR social space from Facebook were true, as the company today unveiled Facebook: Horizon, a new social VR world that allows Oculus Quest and Rift users to meet and mingle in a virtual space, play games, and even create their own experiences.

Since when has learning and development (L&D) become such a negative experience with its intended learners? Could it be because learners have been conditioned by very poor learning experiences over the past two decades, combined with the kinks of technological innovation? Or is it because learning has typically been designed as a one-size-fits-all solution, despite the fact that humans are not clones?
Millions of people meditate or practice mindfulness. That’s roughly 200 to 500 million people on the planet with calmer minds. The Marvellous Machine by 1337 Game Design is an on-rails VR experience that will set you off on a quick dive into where thoughts come from and how to let them pass. Guided by “The Marvellous Machine”. Over two sessions, I sat on my couch for 15 minutes with my VR headset and let someone else take the mental wheel for a bit.

Facebook wants to create a 3D map of the Earth by crowd-sourcing geo-tagged images. After months of speculation, Facebook today confirmed that Facebook Reality Lab is, in fact, developing a pair of AR glasses. While little information about the headset itself was provided during the announcement, the company went into detail regarding LiveMaps, a new program that uses machine learning, localization, and mapping technology to create a virtual map of the real world.
