Today I host a new article of the amazing Rob Cole, passionate maker and ergonomics expert from Immersion Mechanics , already the author of amazing posts on this blog, especially about the ergonomics of the Valve Index. Some weeks ago, he has bought a Tundra HDK , which is basically a Hardware Development Kit to create your objects that can be tracked by a SteamVR system and has played around with it for a while.
O ne prevailing misperception in the tech world is that VR is in the gutter. Some have even pronounced it dead. Such sentiments reflect the backlash to VR’s circa-2016 hype cycle. It didn’t fulfill world-changing proclamations trumpeted at the time… and deserves some grief. But practically speaking, VR is doing just fine and is growing at a healthy pace for an emerging technology that faces practicality headwinds.
Hand tracking first became available on the Oculus Quest back in late 2019. Out of enthusiasm for this new input method, I published a demo of Cubism to SideQuest with experimental hand tracking support only a few days later. Needless to say, this initial demo had several flaws, and didn’t really take the limitations of the technology into account, which is why I decided to initially omit hand tracking support from the full release of Cubism on the Oculus Store.
IVAS can improve a soldier’s situational awareness and decision-making capabilities. The United States Army confirmed via an official statement yesterday that it has awarded Microsoft a contract to deliver 120,000 military-grade HoloLens AR headsets designed for use in a variety of combat scenarios. According to CNBC , this partnership could be worth up to $21.88B over the course of the next 10 years.

To avoid awkward and sometimes disastrous learning content, instructional designers must use authentic translation in the right context to get optimal results. For example, even a simple phrase like “got milk” translates to “are you lactating” in Mexico. Can you imagine what a straight translation might do to your course? With over 317 million people in the US and over 6.7 billion potential customers in the world, personalizing training seems logical.
Some days ago, all the community got excited because on the invitation to WWDC 2021, Apple has drawn an Animoji with some applications reflected on her glasses. Everyone started wondering if Apple could announce its AR glasses at WWDC or not. I have some exclusive info to share with you. Let me just start by saying that yes: AR glasses will be the “One more thing…” announcement at WWDC on June, 7th.

T he future of any tech sector can often be seen in its innovation pipeline. And what better place to see that pipeline in action than early-stage startups? This is why “demo days” for accelerator cohorts/classes are always illuminating. It’s a glimpse into the near future. Another attribute that makes this format valuable is brevity.
FundamentalVR’s multi-person training platform could be the future of remote education for the growing medical sector. In terms of VR-based medical education, few companies are pushing the envelope quite like FundamentalVR. Since the launch of its remote training platform Fundamental Surgery in 2018, the London-based technology and data insight business has established itself as one of the leading providers of professional-grade surgical simulations, offering students and professionals ali
It’s a sunny lockdown day here in Italy, the sun is shining and the trees are blossoming. I hope that your day is sunny too and you are safe and happy. I’m sending you good vibes through this post. Before leaving you to the news of the week, I want to tell you that the AWE Nite event I co-hosted with Cecilia Lascialfari about AR and VR in psychology has been great.
The death of VR has been heralded so often that this technology is starting to take on feline qualities with regard to the number of lives it seems to have. It’s a great click-bait headline that some journalists and commentators like to roll out on a fairly regular basis. In jumping to this conclusion they have invariably focused on consumer adoption of virtual reality, as it’s an easier fit with the “VR is dead” theme than researching further across the sector.
With a rapidly changing economy, Avangrid Renewables looked to virtual reality to develop a standardized form of immersive training in order to onboard and upskill technicians faster than ever before.
A fter expanding and contracting in various VR initiatives, Google continues to be committed to AR. It sees the technology more aligned with the future of search. If search and AR had a baby, it would be visual search — Google’s prevailing AR play, otherwise known as Google Lens. As examined in our Location Wars series, this also takes form in what we call Google’s Internet of Places.
Prism’s immersive algebra learning app breaks down the mathematics of a viral outbreak. As vaccines continue to roll out across the United States as well as the rest of the globe, we’re beginning to see a slow return to normalcy after what feels like an eternity of government-mandated lockdowns and social distancing restrictions. Part of that recovery process will involve studying the rapid progression of this unprecedented global outbreak.
I’ve had the enormous pleasure of speaking with Christopher Lafayette , one of the most esteemed members of our XR community. He’s mostly active on Linkedin and has always worked in VR considering not the technology, but the human and all the collectivity at the center of his vision. I wanted to speak with him about this human-centric vision, and all the big work he’s doing towards inclusion and accessibility in the VR ecosystem.
For the third month running, the number of VR headsets on Steam has reached a new record high of some 3 million, or 2.4% of Steam users. Monthly-connected VR Headsets on Steam. Each month Valve collects info from Steam users to determine some baseline statistics about what kind of hardware and software is used by the platform’s population, and to see how things are changing over time, including the use of VR headsets.

With 191 country signatories to the Paris Climate Agreement now hard at work in the race to zero carbon by 2050, much of the heavy lifting in ecosystem sustainability falls on the shoulders of the world's densely populated urban centers. This conversation considers how today's AI-enabled simulation media, such as AR/VR, can be effectively applied to accelerate learning, understanding, training, and solutions-modeling to sustainability planning and design.
O ne striking realization about spatial computing is that we’re almost seven years into the sector’s current stage. This traces back to Facebook’s Oculus acquisition in early 2014 that kicked off the current wave of excitement….including lots of ups and downs in the intervening years. That excitement culminated in 2016 after the Oculus acquisition had time to set off a chain reaction of startup activity, tech-giant investment, and VC inflows for the “next computing platform.

Developer ViFit this week launched an official Kickstarter for Gym Masters , a narrative-driven VR fitness game that looks as radical as it does exhausting. Whereas most VR fitness games throw you straight into your workout, Gym Masters features its own over-the-top storyline designed to keep you motivated as you partake in a variety of physically-intensive minigames.
The pandemic is causing a shift in brand loyalty with 75% of consumers changing their preferred brands. This modification creates a unique opportunity for smaller, less established retailers to grow their market share. Given this unlikely situation, it’s important that newer and less established brands do not lose sight of what consumers expect when shopping online in favor of exciting technologies that – in theory – could improve conversions.
While Facebook has yet to reveal official unit sales figures for Oculus Quest 2, various data points the company has offered, along with data from developers, has allowed us to hone in on a reasonable estimate. Compared to PSVR, the best selling VR headset to date, Quest 2 may be selling three times as fast. Thanks to PlayStation VR’s leading sales position, Sony has confidently offered up official unit sales figures over the years while other headset makers have opted not to.

Content is King: Here Are the Keys to the Kingdom. by Lucas Nygaard. I f you’re reading this, it’s probably because you’re human. And if you’re human, you have feelings, thoughts, and ideas: Feelings about a certain matter; thoughts where you process information; and ideas about how it all fits together. Studies in biology show that all of this isn’t made up of some kind of cosmic order.

Since when has learning and development (L&D) become such a negative experience with its intended learners? Could it be because learners have been conditioned by very poor learning experiences over the past two decades, combined with the kinks of technological innovation? Or is it because learning has typically been designed as a one-size-fits-all solution, despite the fact that humans are not clones?

The recent success of titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Valheim seem to prove that there is a certain fascination around this brutal and mysterious past. While Viking-themed virtual reality games are still a rare sight, there are a few standout titles we believe are worth checking out if you love Norse mythology.
