Assisted Reality devices like Rokid Max are primarily smartphone accessories, projecting the mobile phone screen, ipad, computer display or simulating a 200-inch screen. Charlie Fink test reviews the latest. This post appeared first on AR Insider.
This has been the week of the Quest 3: the headset has started shipping and I have received my unit, too. Unluckily since I’m crunching at work, I’ve only been able to test it for a bit more than one hour, but I was already pleasantly surprised by it. I don’t have the time to write a full review now, but I hope to write this week at least a “first impression” article because many people are asking my opinion (thank you, really, for your trust!).
Laser Dance is an upcoming mixed reality game that seeks to use Quest’s passthrough capability as more than just a background. In this Guest Article, developer Thomas Van Bouwel explains his approach to designing an MR game that adapts to different environments. Guest Article by Thomas Van Bouwel Thomas is a Belgian-Brazilian VR developer currently based in Brussels.
Immersive training is one of the top verticals for virtual, augmented, mixed, and extended reality (VR/AR/MR/XR). As more companies explore the profound benefits of XR learning, new use cases develop to meet the needs of each enterprise, often with substantial results. XR Today has the pleasure of interviewing Emma Ridderstad, Vice-President and Founder, Warpin Reality , to discuss her company’s collaboration with the Swedish Red Cross.
Speaker: Chris Paxton McMillin, President of D3 Training Solutions
To avoid awkward and sometimes disastrous learning content, instructional designers must use authentic translation in the right context to get optimal results. For example, even a simple phrase like “got milk” translates to “are you lactating” in Mexico. Can you imagine what a straight translation might do to your course? With over 317 million people in the US and over 6.7 billion potential customers in the world, personalizing training seems logical.
Welcome back to Spatial Beats, AR Insider's weekly series that features observations and insights of author and futurist Charlie Fink. This week, we look at Quest 3 reactions and more gen-AI action. This post appeared first on AR Insider.
OpenSim land area tally is now at a new all-time-high of 131,257 standard regions, the fourth month in a row it has hit that target. Meanwhile, several grids are hosting Halloween events this month and getting ready for other fall holidays. OpenSim active users tally is, however, down this month by 3,006 despite being an active season, which can be attributed to downtime on a number of grids.

As a leading social media company, it seemed like Meta would be in the best position to create a rich social experience on its XR headsets. But after almost a decade of building XR platforms, interacting with friends on Meta’s headsets is still a highly fragmented affair. With Vision Pro, Apple is taking a different approach—making apps social right out of the box.
Medical use cases for virtual, augmented, and mixed reality (VR/AR/MR) technologies continue to comprise a large part of the entire extended reality (XR) market. People can better understand how to respond in an emergency scenario using immersive learning and training tools while measuring and monitoring response times, efficacy rates, and emotional reactions to real-life crises.
Geospatial AR is an opportune area, given the relevance of location. Snap is jumping on this opportunity in several ways including custom Landmarkers and Local Lenses. We examine the drivers & dynamics. This post appeared first on AR Insider.
Meta has not seen the results it has hoped for with its investments in the VR space, with an operating loss of $31 billion. However, the recent announcement of Apple’s Vision Pro last June is set to reinvigorate the marketplace. Rolf Illenberger “I and the entire industry was waiting for Apple for a decade,” said Rolf Illenberger, CEO of VRDirect, which provides company software solutions to build their own VR projects.
With a rapidly changing economy, Avangrid Renewables looked to virtual reality to develop a standardized form of immersive training in order to onboard and upskill technicians faster than ever before.
Less than a week since launch, Quest 3 has already gotten the full iFixit teardown treatment, showing off just how slim (and seemingly difficult to repair) the headset really is. iFixit’s Shahram Mokhtari pried apart Quest 3, revealing the innards of Meta’s new $500 mixed reality standalone. The short of it: it’s pretty complicated to dismantle and there aren’t any repair parts as such, getting a [4/10] repairability score in Mokhtari’s video (linked below).

Quest 3 just began shipping last week and headsets are rapidly arriving in the hands of eager buyers. While the 128GB model appears to be in strong supply, the more expensive 512GB model might be more popular than Meta expected. We checked stock availability for direct purchases from Meta.com for Quest 3 (128GB) and Quest 3 (512GB) across all regions where the headsets are sold.
Quest 3 would be lighter if the battery was external, but as much as you might guess. Earlier this week we highlighted the fact that iFixit's Quest 3 teardown revealed that the battery takes up almost all the internal component space when the front plate is removed. Some other headsets like Pico 4 and Quest Pro house the battery in the rear padding instead of in the visor, while Apple Vision Pro has a tethered external battery pack to remove it from your head entirely.
Haptics have come a long way since the N64 Rumble Pak. Now they're an increasingly critical component of achieving immersion in VR. What's the current state and trajectory? This post appeared first on AR Insider.
In what is to be the last of Intel's processor families to use the well-established Core i9, i7, i5, and i3 naming scheme, Intel has released its 14th Generation Core series of desktop processors, aptly codenamed Raptor Lake Refresh (RPL-R). Building upon the already laid foundations of the 13th Gen Core series family, Intel has announced a variety of overclockable K and KF (no iGPU) SKUs, including the flagship Core i9-14900K, the reconfigured Core i7-14700K, and the cheaper, yet capable Co

Since when has learning and development (L&D) become such a negative experience with its intended learners? Could it be because learners have been conditioned by very poor learning experiences over the past two decades, combined with the kinks of technological innovation? Or is it because learning has typically been designed as a one-size-fits-all solution, despite the fact that humans are not clones?
